Booming on After 50 for Babyboomers, March 11, 2005
This review is from: Listen To Your Hormones: A Doctor's Guide To Sex, Love And Hormones-especially For Men (Paperback)
A firefighter friend gave me a copy of Dr. Kryger's book. I read it, bought an extra copy to loan to friends, and decided that I also should visit Dr. Kryger for a testosterone check-up.
I am now on his supplementation regimen, and taking to heart his suggestions for living less stressfully and more joyfully, even gracefully at times. As my Mom used to say, "Growing old ain't for sissies." ButI would add that there is a "smart way to age."
Dr. K's book discusses the endocrine system of hormones, how their interplay works, how their balance can be distorted by environmental toxins, and how aging, in part, is a process of the endocrine system degrading over time.
Every man and woman over 50 should understand that the Master Hormone, Testosterone, is the good guy, not the bad guy in hormonal balancing. Cortisol and estrogen more often deserve the blame for foul moods and rages. Men and women need testosterone, but men need more -- not just for erections, but also for mood, motivation, muscle mass, and mental clarity.
Testosterone is arguably one of the most misunderstood but critically important hormones of our endocrine system. For a long happy life, you should listen to your hormones, and get them checked on a regular basis, especially you Babyboomers out there. Dr. Kryger's book or website is a good place to start.

A book for men and the women who love them., March 27, 2005
This review is from: Listen To Your Hormones: A Doctor's Guide To Sex, Love And Hormones-especially For Men (Paperback)
This book is written for men but its women who really need to read it. In this age of high expectations from wives for their husbands to always be the "best".... breadwinner, athlete or sexual partner..... disappointment is an easy outcome. When I read this book I realized my poor hubby was doing his best, eating right, exercising till the sweat poured off his brow, working 6/7 to meet our financial needs and somehow was not really "enjoying life". His sex drive and erections had disappeared. I suggested he get his testosterone level checked. We were both shocked to find his level ( he is 54) was that of a 75 year old man. "Help!!" we shouted to the doctor , who said, "it's just his age, he's fine." I knew something was wrong but the doctor insisted it was better for him to just slow down a bit and act more like a man his age. It was normal for men to lose their sexual drive as they aged. One night he developed terrible chest pain and had trouble breathing. I drove to the ER with tears in my eyes, thinking, " I might lose this wonderful guy"...... fortunately he survived his heart attack and I learned from reading, Listen To Your Hormones , that men with low testosterone have heart attacks more frequently than those with normal levels. After we found a doctor who would treat his hormone deficiency ( Dr. Kryger) I am happy to say that we are both enjoying life and love a lot more often without using Viagra or Cialis. Thank you for this book, DrK and can you write a book for women and what we should do about our hormones?

From hormones to depression to food choices -- the list goes on -- one begins to comprehend why certain life changes are needed to attain both mental and physical health, not to mention longer life. I, for one, always want to understand "why." Dr. Kryger's book fills this need in an interesting and easy-to-read fashion.
I highly recommend this book for both men and women.
