Book Description

In today's complex, fast-paced, high-intensity organizations, effective communication is paramount. But all too often, messages are misinterpreted, ignored, or missed altogether—stifling creativity, dampening morale, and even threatening achievement of basic goals. Harris's book is about improving communication by focusing on listening, and, in the process, developing more effective leadership skills throughout the organization. It explores ways in which managers and employees alike can elevate listening to the level of influence-to maximize conversational value and relationships through response and feedback.

The Listening Leader integrates insights from management and psychology to offer practical techniques for overcoming common barriers to effective listening. With tips for keeping listening sharp and advice for boosting memory and recall, Harris provides readers with the tools to engage in much more productive dialogue with colleagues, supervisors, employees, and customers, as well as within relationships beyond work. The Listening Leader demonstrates that turning listening from a passive, compliant activity into an active, influential one contributes to more dynamic, trusting, collaborative, candid—and profitable—relationships through which everyone benefits.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Writing for managers and frontline employees alike, consultant Harris focuses on the practical in this guide to improving communication by focusing on listening and developing more effective leadership skills throughout an organization, with the primary goal being the development of listening to the level of influence itself. He describes why listening is elementary to effectiveness, addresses attitudes and demons, and describes how motivational listening contributes to conversational continuity and responsibility, strengthened focus, and an improved communicational divide."

Review

"As Richard Harris points out, good communication happens in two directions: talking, which seems to be the easier part, and listening, which for many, seems more difficult. This book reminds us how to get past the noise to improve the art of listening in both our professional and personal lives. This book contains practical, useful tips on how to make listening a more active part of every discussion, thereby making people and corporations more efficient and effective."

5.0 out of 5 stars "So, what you're saying is that...", November 2, 2006
This review is from: The Listening Leader: Powerful New Strategies for Becoming an Influential Communicator (Hardcover)
I had the good fortune of reading about an author of an intriguing book speaking at my library, and I was able to get a signed book for my daughter's birthday present. Sara loves a good self-help book, and she heard from her Psych teacher that "The Listening Leader" was more specifically helpful than "The Power of Nice" (which we had and liked).

Sara's information was confirmed. Beyond the philosophy of being an effective, more proactive listener in conversations, Dr. Harris offers specific strategies for upgrading the supposedly passive half of communication (listening). Far better than the occasional nod or "uh huh,"
we are advised to audibly get involved, and to make sure that we understand properly, and that the speaker knows that he/she has our full attention. We should see if we can rephrase or summerize what the speaker is saying, using a phrase like, "So, what you're saying is that...."

The speaker is pleased that we are strongly engaged, and we get the benefit of knowing if we are correctly understanding the communication.

This is just a favorite moment in the presentation and book, but there's a
lot more where that came from. Whether you are dealing with clients or students, a spouse, child or stranger, this book will help you become a better listener, and someone who will inspire better listening by others.
