Book Description

July 7, 2011
I’m Listening With a Broken Ear is a true story about a dying dog, Honeybun, the author found on a roadside and grudgingly rescued. A concomitant story of faith, persistence, and love unfolds as both she and her young daughter struggled to help Honeybun overcome severe issues of compromised health, aggression and fear. Untrained to deal with the overwhelming behavior, Vicky then tried to give her up.... unsuccessfully.
Refusing to relinquish her to Animal Control who would undoubtedly euthanize Honeybun,Vicky tripped upon a small rescue organization who offered to help rehabilitate Honeybun for free. During the many months of heartache and struggle, and multiple near deadly attacks on Vicky's other dog, she discovered a modern day parable of the truth that nothing is truly irredeemable. Each victory with the little rescue dog taught personal lessons in redemption and grace, patience and perseverance, and the power of transforming love to spread through a community in most unexpected and unlikely ways.
There were multiple failures, and repeated surrenders to hopelessness. Each time, her weakness was thwarted and overcome by unexpected help and miracles. In the process, Vicky came face to snout with the harsh reality that real compassion involved action and responsibility. If she wanted to save the dog, ultimately it was up to her.
It is a story of redemption, physically and spiritually in a very small corner of the world, told through the story of a discarded dog that no one wanted and no one thought could be saved.
Donations to the animal rescue that helped save this dog can be made at hollowcreekfarm.org

I am neither a dog person, nor a god person - and even I enjoyed this book. I laughed, I cried, but I have vowed never to rescue a dog nor a dingo. A cat, yes, or better yet, a kitten. But no dogs.

Nevertheless, the world is richer for the Vicky Kaseorgs of the planet, whose story of redemption and personal transformation is not only inspirational, but darn funny. Her self-deprecating sense of humor, her compassion, and her inner turmoil are a delightful revelation. She has struck gold with this first novel!

Who would have thought you could find such exceptional quality in an eBook for $2.99???

PS. Any resemblance to any character in this masterpiece of fine writing is purely a coincidence....No animals were harmed in the writing of this review....

I've been a fan of Vicky's daily blog for years, loving both here thoughts and her daily artwork. I've enjoyed her art in galeries from California to North Carolina . . . and have been privy to many of the incidents in her book from her blogs. I hope I;m the first to review this for my iPad . . . and that it has the impact as in:B0032UYGE6 Kindle Bible - The Holy Bible Formatted for the Amazon Kindle-equipped.

Taking casual note of this dying abandoned dog in a parking lot starts a journey of redemption, renewal and ultimate reward for Vicky, her family, and her dogs. It's fun as well as pathos-laden. What Father Flanaghan did for boys (with help), Vicky has done for dogs (with help from rescuers, home schoolers, and the pet public). It is instructional, as well as heart-warming. A story for all, transforming with religious precepts illustrated as they occur.

Thank goodness I can write this with no prejudice, since I am Vicky's proud father.

A good book, but a little too long.

More About the Author

Vicky Kaseorg, describes when she first knew she would become an author: "I used to ride my horse through the neighborhood, though all the neighbors could see was a girl on a blue bicycle.Sometimes I ended up falling off the edge of the earth, but rode to safety on the back of a friendly dragon, rising unexpectedly through the mist. My brain rarely paused in the internal narration of stories. I should have known I would either end up in an institution for the terminally weird, or become a writer."

Kaseorg, born in Pennsylvania in 1956, studied art and writing at Binhamton University, and became a professional artist early in her career. She went on to graduate school at USC Los Angeles where she studied Occupational Therapy. She owned her own Occupational Therapy practice for many years in NY, and with the birth of her prodigiously giftted first son, began homeschooling. She has bicycled across the USA, run a marathon, completed a biathalon, learned to ski at age 50, successfully graduated two of her three children to prestigious universities, yet still feels the most difficult task she has ever had to accomplish "is living a consistent, righteous life before God and my family."

Between running a business and homeschooling, Vicky never stopped writing. Upon moving to NC, she retired from Occupational Therapy and focused on art, teaching art, and homeschooling her three children. She began writing her first book in 2009 when the rescue and rehabilitation of a homeless, hopeless, vicious dog sparked the desire to capture the story in prose.

She is the mother of three children, two now grown. She homeschooled them all from Kindergarten until graduation. The oldest, Anders, graduated from MIT, co-founded KSplice, and then sold the business to Oracle. The second son, Matthias, graduated from UVa, and is currently in law school at Washington and Lee. A 14 year old daughter, Asherel, remains at home, and is being homeschooled, taxing Vicky's abilities in Geometry, Advanced Biology, and AP American History.
"This is proof that God exists," she says, "As there is no way I could teach those on my own power."

She is the published author of I'm Listening with A Broken Ear (published July 2011), which has been a top ten dog training best seller for several weeks on Amazon ebooks. Her second book, God Drives a Tow Truck was published in February 2012 and within the first weeks of publication had 25,000 downloads. When released, it was the top best seller in the Angel category and remains in the top ten in its genre on the Amazon E-book list. While clearly spiritual in nature, she wrote both books with the desire that the books be accessible to believers and non-believers. Her books are spiced with humor throughout, as she recognizes " that life is very hard. If one doesn't seek the humor in how miserable and weak we humans tend to be, we would spend most of our hours weeping. Laughter is a gift of God."

Family members and friends used to chide Vicky for "seeing God in everything", when she would squeeze out a biblical message in not only the common-place events of her day, but in secular movies, books, and activities. With the rescue of the dog that led to her first book, Vicky realized that perhaps this tendency of hers was not a flaw. Perhaps it could even be used to help others find that God was indeed speaking to them...had always been speaking to them.  To this end, she also is going on her third year of writing a daily inspirational blog, which she illustrates, at vickykaseorg.blogspot.com.

She is currently at work on her third book, while continuing to homeschool her highschool age daughter. Vicky is active in volunteer work, promoting responsible animal rescue, kayaking, bicycling, running, skiing, and art. She continues to teach art classes, and coach various teams in which her daughter is involved. She lives in Charlotte with her husband of 32 years, Arvo, along with her daughter, two dogs, a parakeet, and countless spiders which her daughter and she actively rescue and set free whenever possible.
