Editorial Reviews

The cornerstone of this year's Liszt 200 celebration: a flip-top cube housing 34 CDs that cover the range of Liszt's vast output like no other box on the market! That's just over four bucks a CD, but these are no "bargain-bin" Liszt interpreters: Krystian Zimerman, Daniel Barenboim, Claudio Arrau, Alice Sara Ott, Bernard Haitink, Sir Georg Solti, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Brigitte Fassbaender and more. You get 2 CDs of works for piano and orchestra, 7 CDs of orchestral works, 12 CDs of solo piano works, 2 CDs of organ works, 5 CDs of lieder and 6 CDs of sacred choral works. It's the biggest and best Liszt set you'll find: Concertos for Piano Nos. 1 & 2; Hungarian Fantasy for Piano and Orchestra; Faust Symphony; Dante Symphony; Prometheus; Mephisto Waltz No. 2 for Orchestra; Six Hungarian Rhapsodies for Orchestra; Orpheus; Hungarian Coronation Mass; La Tombe Et La Rose; Hohe Liebe; In Liebeslust; Jugendgluck; La Perla; Prelude and Fugue for Organ on B-A-C-H; Isolde's "Liebestod" from Wagner's "Tristan"; Six Transcendental Etudes After Paganini; Sonata for Piano in B Minor , and more!

Part of Liszt's Tribute in the Bicentennial Year

This Liszt bicentennial year 2011 has been well represented with the release of at least three mega box sets so far: The first one early on in 2011 was the release of the Leslie Howard ninety nine disc megalith of all known piano music.

Liszt: The Complete Piano Music

The second one was the Brilliant Liszt Portrait, which many classical music fans here scarfed up when Amazon erroneously (according to Amazon, at least) and mistakenly under priced it together with a half dozen other Brilliant Classics releases. This box set is more of a hastily thrown together pastiche, more of a deeper than superficial incursion into the Liszt oeurve rather than a genuine attempt at completion.

Liszt Portrait

Now, DG (Polygram, Universal Classics, London, Decca, Philips, et. al.) has released their tribute, this thirty four disc set, to the composer.

Physically, the box is enclosed in a cardboard cube with cardboard (not cheap white paper) sleeves. The box physically, fiscally, and superficially resembles its Siamese twins, so to speak: The earlier Robert Schumann Masterworks set, Schumann: The Masterworks, released a little over a year ago, and the Brahms Complete Edition, Brahms Complete Edition, released in 2009. Each one has the distinction of being priced at a little under one hundred dollars.

I'm a big Liszt fan and personally urge this purchase !!

The "Consolations" for piano #1-6 are heartfelt and soothing. The "Years of Pilgrimage" "Pastoral" is my favorite piece in all of classical musicdom! Lazar Berman does a fantastic cycle on all three of the "Years of Pilgrimage" sets of compositions !!

Liszt can make you cry with his mastery of musical art. He touches deep into the soul with some pieces.

However, some leider does sound old.

I highly recommend Jorges Bolets version of the "Grand Etudes" also known as the "Transcendental Suites" instead of the feverishly RUSHED !!!! version in this set. All else is fine and competent. All 30 + cd's loaded perfectly on my computer !!!

Liszt was the greatest classical rock star ever known. His life story should be made into a hollywood blockbuster or television series! Once when the paid female forgot to faint on que during Liszt's concert.....he promptly fainted instead. All should read his long life biography.

Good day!

If you know anything about music, most especially piano, then nothing need be said about Liszt. This particular collection I really enjoy. It includes his symphonies, symphonic poems, solo piano pieces, organ pieces... if you are looking simply for a collection of Liszt's complete works, then look no further. These works are exquisitely performed by some very talented musicians.

Even, or especially, if you don't know much about Liszt or his music, I highly recommend this set.

Set includes Barenboim's peerless recording of the Wagner Paraphrases, one of the greatest piano recordings of all time. I'd buy this for tat disk alone.
