I have several recordings of Liszt's Transcriptions of Schubert's Songs but I have never heard anything like the piano playing in this one. Valerie Tryon has a technique & touch like no other, as well as a beauty of artistic expression I find difficult to describe. The selection of songs here rank amongst Schubert's best. This CD takes my breath away, sends shivers up the spine & brings tears to the eyes.
For anyone who loves Schubert Lieder, these Liszt Transcriptions will provide a most rewarding & spiritually uplifting musical experience. I guess one word could sum it up for me. Sublime.

This record in my mind is a hit. Since I am not a great fan of the lied, this pianistic rendering of Schubert's songs delights me. It combines the best of two composers: Schubert's unequaled sense of melody and Liszt's genius of the piano and flair for drama. The result is outstanding and the absence of any recording of these transcriptions was a shame - which Naxos has erased. Valerie Tryon is an excellent pianist, though I have no comparison with any other player for this repertoire. But she serves the music with sensitivity and intelligence; and the recording is impeccable, close enough to the piano, but with a good sense of space.

If you like solo classical piano music, you must have this CD. The "marriage" of Scubert and Liszt is nothing less than transcendental. A well-engineered recording of great performances.
