Remember the first Motely Crue album? Or L.A. Guns? The raw intensity? The fun? This is Vains of Jenna. A return to the sunset strip a la 1987. The have it all from the clothing, to the sneer to the sleazy lyrics and swagger. Except it's 2007 and we've been begging to have this music back on the air waves and in the record stores. Buy it! Enjoy it! Throw your fist in the air and bang your head!

From the depths of the 80s,

Vains of Jenna appear as if they've come from the 80s with their wild hair, ripped clothing, and bandanas, but they've been together only since 2005. Considering their style of music is very similar to that of Faster Pussycat, Motley Crue, and perhaps even Guns N' Roses, the look is practically a requisite when mentally picturing the images of these famous bands. Thanks to Bam Margera and his record label, Filthy Note, Vains of Jenna have received more publicity than they would be getting with another unfamiliar label. However, notorious label or not, they're quietly making a name for themselves.
Lit Up/Let Down is untamed, dirty, and fun - this is no surprise since the lineup consists of four young musicians. The songs Vains of Jenna have put together are impressive, but they could be more polished. The vocals aren't exactly beautiful, and the lyrics aren't brilliant, but this is how it should sound if an 80s emulation is the motive (and it is, according to the band's biography). The riffs are grungy and catchy, and the last two acoustic songs are nice endings to the album. Simply put, Lit Up/Let Down rocks. Expect greater things in the future, though.

Rock n Roll is Back!!,

If you're looking for pure Rock n Roll with attitude - these guys have it - and this is the album for you. The album is amazing full of energy, hard riffs and awesome lyrics. Their stage performance is remarkable and memorable - I've seen them four times in concert and each show they rock harder than last. With lyrics such as, "cocaine habit just to ease the pain, and to fade away again," in Hard to Be Vain, I'm sure these guys won't fade away anytime soon. They rock! If you're looking for a real rock performance check these guys out and buy their album!

Sleaze Me!,

Nice and sleazy with a hardcore edge. Vains Of Jenna is another favorite band of mine, and another excellent band out of Sweden. We need more bands like this to surface and rock our asses off. Lit Up/Let Down does just that. In your face guitars and drums, with Lizzy DeVine's fantastic vocals tearing your skin right off! The slower title track "Lit Up/Let Down" rocks with such passion and grace, while the rest knock you down with raw rockin power. I can't say enough about the true talent of this band. But, Vains Of Jenna and Lizzy DeVine sadly went their separate ways back in 2010, and so far we are all still waiting for Lizzy to pick up where he left off. In my opinion, the new singer is not doing the band and their songs justice, and the sleazy but beautiful edge is gone. So for me, I will be playing "The Art Of Telling Lies" and "Lit Up/Let Down" until I cant play them no more.

Sleaze rock lives!,

It's always good to see that the spirit of the 80's Hollywood rock scene is alive and well, and has spread across the globe. Just under the radar, bands in America (Dirty Penny, Rockets to Ruin), Australia (Airbourne), The UK (the Answer) and elsewhere are doing their part to bring sleazy, alcohol-fueled rock n' roll back to the masses. Nowhere is this scene more exciting than Sweden, which boasts bands like Hardcore Superstar, Crashdiet and Vains of Jenna.
Vains of Jenna, which benefits from the patronage of MTV personality Bam Margera (hey, it did wonders for HIM), debuted in 2006 with Lit Up/Let Down, an album of pure sleaze rock that would make Pretty Boy Floyd and Faster Pussycat proud. It's all snarling, booze-soaked sleaze anthems that sound straight from the Sunset Strip circa 1987. Unfortunately the production isn't what it could be, which makes it hard to compare Lit Up/Let Down favorably with the latest Airbourne or Hardcore Superstar release. It also lacks some of the catchy melodic aspects that you typically hear from the Swedish rock bands. They're not the best new sleaze rock band on the scene, or even the best Swedish sleaze rock band, but I'll still take as much of this kind of music as I can get my hands on. Mainstream rock bands have forgotten how to deliver fun rock n' roll music, but bands like Hardcore Superstar, Endeverafter, the Last Vegas, and Vains of Jenna definitely still remember. PS - I'm seeing Vains of Jenna live this weekend (with Dirty Penny). We'll see if their live show can make me a believer.

A fun album!,

A nice album, that reminisces back to L.A. Guns, Vains of Jenna have created a good bit of sleaze rock, with a good mix of hard rockers and the ever-present power ballad. While the vocals can irritate a bit, the album is, overall, highly enjoyable and very listenable.

much in the same vein as the best of the Sunset Strip
(Guns N'Roses, L.A. Guns, Faster Pussycat), Vains of Jenna cleverly mix snarl and attitude with catchy hooks. "Hard to Be Vain" and "Lit Up/Let Down" are both killer tracks, and there's no filler to be found... - cRAIG

I saw these guys in Cleveland opening for Poison and Ratt, and They were an amazing opening band with a great live show. This album really shows the talent behind the band. It rocks harder and better with each listen.
It's like the 80's all over. So if you like 80's pop metal, then i'd reccomend this album to you. |
