The pegs are hard to remove.
Mike
It was so frustrating for him that he only played with it once, and never wanted to again.
Emily
It's uneven and dim - there are light and dark areas all over the screen.

No, this is not the original that I remember, but it still has merit. My son got this for his 4th birthday and I got so excited because I fondly remember my Lite Brite from 30 years ago. It was the only toy we got out after his party and before bed (he was pretty overwhelmed and tired from the party), but despite being tired, we did a whole design. I didn't recall LB being educational, but it is. It requires capital letters to be recalled (there are 8-10 different colors, so that many letters need to be matched to the corresponding peg). There is instant feedback if the child matches the wrong color to a letter since the mistake will show up in the pattern. Finally, it's great fine motor skill work. Pushing those little pegs into the board is a bit difficult (in an okay way) so that the little muscles in their hands work hard grasping the pegs.

I would say it's not terribly bright, however if you put in perspective, you do realize it lights up pretty well. By turning the light off w/the pattern complete, then back on, it's easy to see that the pegs have lit up.

My son did get a little frustrated towards the end, but again, he was tired. I think all in all, it will be a nice toy. Not amazing, but not a total dud. I would say easily, a 6 year old-8 year old would love it! A patient 4 or 5 year old will also enjoy it.

First off, I'm about the size of a football player. And it took me about 10 minutes to pull out all of these pegs for my 4 year old. When bunched together, these things are just no possible for a young child to pop them out. The background also is quite dim. We had to play with this in a completely dark room to see the light coming through. Save yourself from this toy. It's no where close to the original.

A gift for our 4 year old we didn't even get through 1/2 a picture. The lights are not bright enough to illuminate the pegs at all! Frustrating. Nothing like the original ones. Returning it!

Light so dim that only a couple of pegs can be seen in a dark closet with the door closed. The pegs are hard to remove. Very disappointing.

It's shameful that Hasbro has let a terrific toy like Lite Brite devolve to this dimly lit shadow of its former self.

In comparison with vintage lite brites, this LED version is 1/10th as bright.

The payoff after creating a design should be switching on the light to see your masterpiece glow.

Sadly, this LED version barely lights up some of the pegs and doesn't light up pegs away from the dim light source.

My 4 year old daughter received this for her birthday. I was very excited, because I loved my Lite Bright growing up. It is a piece of JUNK!!! The pegs are hard to put in and nearly impossible to pull out. The light behind it stinks and barely lights it up. Do NOT buy this product.

Like many of the other reviewers, I used a Lite Brite as a kid and have fond memories of this toy. Pushing in the pegs on this version versus the old seems similar enough, but unfortunately the back lighting is completely inadequate so the pegs don't light up that much and do so unevenly. Some of the pegs in the corners really don't light up at all. If they just added a few more LED's to this unit it would be much better.

My daughter got this for her birthday (her favorite color is blue which is why she got this instead of the pink one) and was really excited until she made a picture with the pegs and then tried to remove them. What a joke! They are SO hard to remove - even for adults. It hurt my fingers trying to pry the stupid things out of the screen so that she could do another picture. I wish that I had returned it. This is not a toy that I would recommend for anyone, unless you want to drill or file all the little holes just a little bit bigger - and really, who wants to do that? My other complaint is that the light is not bright enough. It's uneven and dim - there are light and dark areas all over the screen. I would wait until they make a better one, or buy another toy. Maybe look for one of the older models that aren't so difficult to use! Oh, and the tray that holds the pegs is hard to use - it doesn't open very smoothly. You have to force it open and then the pegs go flying everywhere when you do get it opened. Do yourself a favor and go for another toy. This one's not worth the money or the aggravation.
