I purchased this PATA writer for my sisters old Dell 4400 she's attached to. It installed easy, just plugged it in, windows installed drivers for it and does everything it's supposed to do. It' writes CD'S, DVD'S, Dual Layer DVD'S, burns labels on Lite-On disc, etc. Would purshase again. I use a different version of this writer in my PC but it's SATA and it works great and it's fast.

This DVD drive is on the higher end of optical drive technology as far as its speeds go. Of course, multi-drives like this generally have lower CD-ROM speeds than ordinary CD-ROM drives, and I don't deny that my old CD-ROM is faster reading CD's (it's 52x rather than this Lite-On 48x). But for a DVD drive, this one has the better speeds.

Furthermore, this DVD drive comes with Nero Essentials 7 (at least mine did), which allows you to view and touch-up digital photos, record videos with your digital camera (sold separately), cut & splice clips to make movies, build video DVD's and audio CD's, and more!

This drive's compatibility is also a big plus. I've seen optical drives that don't like working with Windows XP, but this one works just fine. It uses standard Windows drivers, so you don't have to install Nero just to use the drive.

The only old-fashioned feature of this drive is its being PATA (though that takes an unreal amount off the price, or so it looks judging by the prices of the SATA ones). I got this PATA drive because 1) it was very affordable, and 2) because my motherboard only has 2 SATA slots, one of which is occupied by my hard drive and the other of which I hope to use for another hard drive.

So all the way around, this DVD combo drive is a great choice if you want a lot for a low price.

This was an used item, but it performed admirably. A PATA drive (that's IDE to us old guys) is measurably slower than a SATA drive, but in the case of a DVD write, that difference is negligible. We're talking milliseconds in transfer rates as in the case of reading a DVD and transferring the information to your hard drive, which is a lot slower than transfer rates from the hard drive to the CPU. But the minimal speed difference between a PATA and SATA DVD device is hardly worth the much larger difference in price between the two.

Quality optical drive and the highly affordable price is just a bonus. Received in perfect condition factory sealed with all documentation, hardware and software as described. Construction of the unit is very impressive. Sturdy where it counts and tastefully finished bezel to compliment enclosure of choice. Purchased to add DVD burning capability to an IBM IntelliStation M Pro running XP Pro SP3. Literally installed in minutes with included screws, booted and immediately recognized. Physical operation is extremely quiet and the tray is probably the smoothest of all the drives I own. Personally don't care for Nero so tossed it, but a crippled version is furnished on disc if you're a fan. Ordered a pancake of Verbatims along with this drive (new FFP packaging from Amazon of course!) and haven't burned a coaster yet. Speed is also great and the difference between this drive rated at 22x and another virtually identical SATA rated at 24x is negligible. Would not hesitate suggesting to anyone shopping for an internal IDE and Amazon has the best price online for a brand new drive shipped free. (FWIW: The description states it comes with an extra white bezel but the one I received didn't include it.)

The original DVD writer in my five year old Gateway 5068E finally died and I replaced it with this. It was a snap to install and it reads and writes DVDs with excellent quality. The price is fantastic and I am well-pleased. The only problem I have is the fact that it is apparently supposed to fit inside the covering on the Gateway, but it is too large. Gateway must have used a proprietary writer from Lite-on originally. However, as we tell our children, looks ain't everything and it has a nice personality. I am going to order another one of these for my old Gateway 504.

did not work right,movies/music playing was stuttering, draging, same cd/dvd diska played perfectly by another drive. The drive tray does not open all the time.I have Light-on dvd rom and cd re-writer that came with dell dimension 8200 since 2002 and still working with no issues.I really like Light-on,but this did not measure up to the task.

Bought same model at another site but encountered the same problems.

I installed this as a second DVD drive on my Dell XPS 400 system using Windows XP. It was very easy to install and XP installed software automatically. It runs perfectly and is much faster than the DVD drive that came with the computer. Installation and startup took only about 20 minutes.

Works great, installed easily and with Linux UBUNTU no driver had to be loaded. I'm glad I chose this product.
