Book Description

December 7, 1992 0435087592 978-0435087593
For every teacher who has sought practical, comprehensive methods for recording and analyzing students' literacy processes, Literacy Assessment: A Handbook of Instruments will be an invaluable resource. The instruments in this handbook include "performance assessments" as well as forms and procedures that teachers have used to conduct ongoing assessment and encourage student self-assessment. They include interviews and attitude surveys, running records, comprehension checklists, spelling analysis, and emergent reading and writing evaluations. Most of the instruments have been developed by teachers, or in conjunction with teachers, for use in particular educational situations.

Literacy Assessment: A Handbook of Instruments was compiled to make assessment instruments discussed in Windows into Literacy more readily available to readers. Teachers may photocopy the instruments "as is" for classroom use only.

This review is from: Literacy Assessment: A Handbook of Instruments (Spiral-bound)
I just finished using this book as a resource in a couple of graduate courses I'm taking focused on literacy. I found many very useful ideas, explanations, and reproducible forms to use inside of this one resource book such as parents as learning partners, student self- assessment, discovering student interests, and ways to guide students into thinking about the things they do as learners. One of the things I really found useful about this book is that it is filled with forms that can be used with students of any age or grade level. There are forms that can be filled out by parents for students in the younger grades in order to give the classroom teacher a good idea of each family's literacy habits at home. There are forms that can be given directly to older students to assist them in evaluating their own pieces of work or guiding them through self-assessments(thinking about the things they do as learners/what they do well/what they would like to improve). Some forms are even printed first in English and then in Spanish. There are forms that focus on reading strategies, writing strategies, DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time, spelling strategies, student attitudes about reading and writing, etc. I believe the thing that I found most convenient about this book is that I felt that I saved a lot of time not having to search all over the place or through many different books looking for different types of assessments ideas or information. The forms are ready-made to save you time from creating them yourself. There are examples for any grade level, age, subject, or purpose. This book is a one stop shop!
