This is an excellent book. It is an easy read, and it offers many up to date reading strategies. I would recommend it to any elementary school teacher! I originally bought this for a class (Survey of Reading) but I ended up using it to study for my Praxis II: Reading Across the Curriculum. I studied the vocabulary mostly and received almost a perfect score. I would DEFINITELY get this book if you are looking for a "review" book for all the categories on the Reading Across the Curriculum test for the praxis II.

"Literacy: Helping Children Construct Meaning" is a book that is for the educator and layman alike, written in readable prose that is never overwhelming and always enlightening for anyone concerned with children's literacy. The book presents information that is critical for the teaching of reading from readers at the earliest stage of development to middle school or high school-aged children. Liberally featuring black and white, as well as color, photos and illustrations, the book also provides a wide-range of Internet sites that can be visited to find activities, journalistic features, and various other topics of interest for those that are in the business of educating children.
An ensightful appendix and glossary explains terms and concepts that are essential for literary development among the young.

This book was used in a literacy class of mine, and I am SO happy my instructor picked it! We all agreed it was one of the best educator books we've had in all of our reading endorsement classes. Filled with awesome teaching ideas and reproducibles, this is a GREAT buy.

I ordered this textbook after finding a copy of it in the public library. I like the format of the book and the ease of reading. I am using it to supplement my reserch for a grad reading course. It is an excellent resource and I could not do without it. Frankly, I got tired of the overdo fees I was chalking up at the library. Now I have my own personal copy. This book has helped me with research for six of my grad courses in reading education. I'm half way through and still using this book as a major reference. It has everything you could possibly need on reading terminology, techniques, methods, research, experts, and references, etc. The authors have written three additional editions since the fourth edition was published, but the print in this book is substantially larger and easier to read for persons with vision difficulties. The charts are simple and larger. The new books are a bit more difficult to read due to the smaller compressed print, typeface, and feature placements (graphs, charts, diagrams, etc.).

Smelly book!,
This review is from: Literacy: Helping Children Construct Meaning (Paperback)
I was VERY unhappy with my book purchase. When I recieved it the first thing I noticed was a VERY unpleasant odor coming from the book. I thought it would go away but it did not. It was one of the most disgusting and vulgar smells I have ever smelt. I could not even read the book without getting nausious. I asked for a replacement and they said there was nothing they could do and that is was probaly just the ink. I tried everything to get the smell out but ended up throwing it away and buying another one.
Very dissatisfied customer! |
