Book Description

1890871370 978-1890871376 January 2003
The third edition of Literacy and Learning in the Content Areas will help readers build the knowledge, motivation, tools, and confidence they need as they integrate literacy into their content area classrooms.

This book's unique approach to teaching content area literacy in middle and high school classrooms will actively engage preservice and practicing teachers in reading and writing and the very activities that they will use to teach literacy to their own students. Rather than passively learning about strategies for incorporating content area literacy activities, readers get hands-on experiencein such techniques as mapping/webbing, anticipation guides, booktalks, class websites, and journal writing and reflection.

Readers also learn how to integrate children s and young adult literature, primary sources, biographies, essays, poetry, and online content, communities, and websites into their classrooms. Each chapter of this valuable resource offers concrete teaching examples and practical suggestions to help make literacy relevant to students content area learning.

Author Sharon Kane demonstrates how relevant reading, writing, speaking, listening, and visual learning activities can improve learning in content area subjects and help readers meet national content knowledge standards and benchmarks. This book demonstrates that a standards-based curriculum can use literacy strategies not as add-ons but as integral to content teaching itself.

Special Features of the Book A companion website will offer additional activities, resources, and teaching tools as well as a Discussion Forum where readers can interact with current and future content area teachers to share ideas and teaching materials and receive feedback about them.
BookTalks introduce readers to wonderful books in many genres and subjects and show teachers how to use booktalks in their own classrooms. Teaching in Action examples, identified by content area, describe actual content area teachers in the classroom. Application Activities help readers to apply everything they've learned to their own field experiences and to prepare materials for classroom use.

New to the Third Edition New sections on:
Decoding and fluency
Common core standards
Response to Intervention (RTI)
Working with literacy coaches

5.0 out of 5 stars As a student/instructor, December 11, 2010
I was fortunate enough to have Sharon Kane as a professor at SUNY Oswego in my Literacy program. We used her first edition textbook for our class. I ended up taking two courses with her, and if I could have; I would have taken all of my literacy classes with her. I now teach incoming freshman to read at the college level and use many young adult novels in my (3) levels of courses. All because of Sharon Kane. Awesome textbook, and awesome professor!

This review is from: Literacy and Learning in the Content Areas (Paperback)
This book is a great textbook for teaching the reader how to teach literacy. The author gives many examples and covers just about every content area in her examples. It is fairly easy reading and is only occasionally dry. What is perhaps the best about this textbook is the author has obviously done a lot of research and the reader always has easy access to great sources for books to use in the classroom library.
