Love the "Making Books" section within each dramatic play activity, December 28, 2010
This review is from: Literacy Play : Over 300 Dramatic Play Activities that Teach Pre-Reading Skills (Paperback)
I love this book. I am a parent of three children (ages 2, 4, 6) and the dramatic play activities in this book are fun for all of them. After checking this book out from the library several times I purchased it because I wanted to use it regularly with my children.
I originally read it because I was interested in setting out different props in my home that would engage my children in dramatic play. But the book is so much more than that. My favorite thing about this book is that each activity includes suggestions for art projects and creative books children can make as an extension to the dramatic play. And the appendix includes copy masters for making props and making books of different shapes (e.g., shoe, car, ice-cream cone, etc.).
This week, for example, my children and I made paper plate pizzas (pg. 116) by painting with red paint mixed with glue and adding yellow yarn (cheese) and paper toppings. The next day we stapled some paper (cut into circles) on the back of the plate. Inside this "pizza book", we illustrated a simple story about how to make a pizza. It was great fun!
This book has inspired me to designate a room in our home as a dramatic play room. Each week I have been putting different props in the room (as the book suggests) and my children have pretended to go camping, run a pizza parlor, or work at the post office. It's been fun to hear my children using new vocabulary words and see them reading or writing (or pretending to read and write) in a meaningful, real-life situation. I highly recommend this book.

love it, May 30, 2009

love it; great ideas for dramatic play and literacy activities; my preschooler loves doing them and it's time well spent; the best learning takes place when kids don't feel they're being "schooled" and this definitely fits the bill

This book had great ideas for any dramatic play area.
I have used quite a few in my dramatic play area at school.
I also enjoyed the printables in the back of the book.
