From the Back Cover

What can an examination of literacy narratives at home, in school, and at church teach educators and researchers about the way Americans value speaking, reading, and writing? Do educators, perhaps unintentionally, believe that their manner of speaking or education is superior to that of their students? How does this belief affect educators' relationships with their students and their students' attitudes toward reading and writing? "Literacy Shutdown: Stories of Six American Women" tells the stories of women from different life circumstances to show the importance of literacy learning in all areas of life and the ways that educators, often unconsciously, shut out students from different cultural or economic backgrounds.

Contending that in the United States, manner of speech and educational background reflect cultural status, author Daphne Key attempts to prove that what is often described as illiteracy is in fact a shutting down response to those in positions of power. Interviewing six American women at length, Key discovered that all of them had experienced either a "reluctance to read, to write, and to speak publicly" or a "need to shut down in the presence of others deemed more powerful, more correct, or more educated."

Whenever possible, Key uses the women's own words to tell their stories. What emerges is a provocative and often moving exploration of the way that cultural arrogance and assumptions affect women's lives and their literacy development.
