The third edition of Literacy's Beginnings: Supporting Young Readers and Writers offers an integrated, literature-based approach to reading and writing instruction keyed to the typical developmental stages through which most children pass. Its emphasis is on child-centered instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, decoding, comprehension, and interpretation. Numerous vignettes are presented, which describe young children's reading and writing from birth to age eight. Children's learning is examined in social settings, including home, preschool, and school. A thorough description of ways to organize an environment to stimulate the growth of language, both written and oral, makes the text an invaluable resource for prospective teachers of children from birth to age eight.

A thorough description of ways to organize an environment to stimulate the growth of language, both written and oral, makes the text an invaluable resource for prospective teachers of children from birth to age eight. Special attention is given to instruction in phonological and phonemic awareness embedded in a literature-based program. Special attention is also given to the unique opportunities for literacy development afforded by computers.

For anyone interested in emergent literacy (birth through age 8).

5.0 out of 5 stars Literacy's Beginnings, October 31, 2010

Literacy's Beginnings is very informative and helpful if you are a teacher and would like to improve your reading and writing lessons. Stages of literacy are given with examples, as well as suggestions and plans for struggling readers and ELL readers. Information is also given for"normal" readers and adolescent readers. This is a great book even though the price is rather high.

3.0 out of 5 stars Watch out for highlighting, June 28, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I needed this book for a class, and it arrived in time and in very good condition as promised by the seller. The seller mentioned that it was slightly highlighted, but neglected to say that the highlighting was blue. The dark blue was distracting for me, and made it more difficult to read the pages.
I would definitely use this seller again. They ship on time and offer great prices.
