Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Travel books provide that most important ingredient of enjoyable touring--anticipation. Following up on his Literary Guide and Companion to Southern England ( LJ 8/85), Cooper connects the names on the map to places, events, and characters in the English literary world. For example, he points out amusing anecdotes like the Lady Godiva and Peeping Tom legends that circulate in Coventry. Bits of poetry punctuate the commentary, enhancing the description of the countryside or a village with a few lines from a familiar English writer. One would wish, however, to see more women authors represented. Except for several references to George Eliot, the book concentrates on men writers. This is an entertaining and information-packed guide that should prove invaluable for all who love British literature and wish to make a literary pilgrimage to England.
