Book Description

This thematic introduction to literature is distinguished by its inclusion of both traditional and contemporary writers, writers from the British and American tradition, ethnic writers from the United States, and writers from other cultures. A newly revised pedagogy highlights brevity, clarity, and accuracy, providing simple and effective strategies for reading and writing about literature. Readers are asked to observe, reflect on, and comment upon the social, political, and cultural aspects of the literature being examined in order to develop a thorough understanding without filtering through too much technical writing. The literature itself is organized thematically into units, each including stories, poems, and plays arranged in clusters to provoke personal, analytical, and critical responses. For those interested in studying literature from other cultures.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

This thematic introduction to literature including both traditional and contemporary writers, Western and non-Western writers, asks the reader to observe, reflect on, and comment upon the social, political, and cultural aspects of the literature being examined. The literature itself is organized thematically. Within each unit, stories, poems, and plays are arranged in clusters to provoke personal, analytical, and critical responses. Two essays per chapter encourage readers to respond critically to the thematic issues under discussion. This new edition includes two new plays, Euripides' The Trojan Women and Moliere's Tartuff, along with a revised section on "Using Film and Video." Also contains a section on "Using the Internet to Research Literary Sources" as well as an expanded glossary of literary and cultural terms. For those interested in a global and multicultural approach to literature. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Great book, came quick and was in great shape. The only beef I had is that it was sent from 5 miles away and they still charged me a flat fee for shipping :( I will order again from them and book was just as described. A+

4.0 out of 5 stars Pain and suffering, September 11, 2009

This review is from: Literature Across Cultures (4th Edition) (Paperback)
This book was purchased for my wifes college class. She has just turned 50 and last year decided to return to school and complete her masters in business. English lit. was a requirement she had to complete again. My wife is quite a student but when it comes to poetry she hasn't a clue. The book has many examples of poetry and many are quite obscure. She was also required to write 2 poems for the final in this course using this textbook as an example, but, they were not to rhyme. She almost died trying NOT to ryhme. Somehow she survived. She says she never wants to see a poem again, nor this textbook.. Nothing personal I am sure...She said that the book is an example of pain and suffering, now I know why..
