More About the Author

Harvey "Smokey" Daniels has been a city and suburban public school teacher, a university professor, a classroom consultant, and writer and editor. He is the author of 13 books on literacy, language, and school change, most of which are available on Amazon. Among his best known titles are Literature Circles: Voice and Choice in Book Clubs and Reading Groups, Subjects Matter: Every Teacher's Guide to Content-Area Reading, and Content Area Writing. His latest book is Conversation and Collaboration: Inquiry Circles in Action, with Stephanie Harvey.

After living and working in Chicago for many years, Smokey and his wife Elaine, also a teacher educator, recently moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he is on the faculty of the University of New Mexico and regularly teaches students at Salazar School. Last year, Smokey spoke and consulted in 19 states and Canada, helping teachers and kids to think more deeply about the subject matter of the curriculum -- and to pursue the burning questions they have as curious human beings.

This book is awesome for any educator that wants to successfully begin and maintain literature circles in their classrooms. It gives you step by step information about how to introduce the concept to your students, how they should be run, the roles of the students, and how to assess your students. This is a MUST HAVE for ELA teachers!

Wordy, takes time to get through the fluff and get to the useful ideas. Had I been in a book store and able to thumb through the pages I would not have purchased this book. I'm looking for ideas and easy accessibility. This book isn't it.

This book is great for anyone interested in doing something a litle different in your classroom. I have used this concept for the last 8 years and my kids always enjoy learning with it. It is a bit harder to do with high school students, but I just choose novels that relate to them and that they actually enjoy reading. It makes learning a little less painful to them! I'm all about students learning when they don't even realize they are learning!
