The Giver: a book to teach and to learn,
By
This review is from: Literature Guide: The Giver (Grades 4-8) (Paperback)
I picked up the Giver because I had been a long time fan of Lowry's other books and stories.I was intruigued by its well written timelessnes, exploring the workings of a society created to be pleasent for all who dwell within it. There is a cure for anything that ails: an answer for all problems; it has a social order that is balanced, with healing, and keeps everyone happy. Reading it as an adult, I was pleased to see that most of the words and ideas were for young adults and that words and concepts that may have been unfamiliar were definable from the context, or asked of an adult (I recommend parents read this book as well, your child will have questions). This book, especially if shared among a group, or even just a parent/child unit, will spark good discussions about serious life questions, which, in turn, will help promote emotional growth in the child(ren) and/or adults. Yes, I laughed, yes, I cried. It has a sadness and a joy permeating it, and will be a learning tool in my household for the next generations.

How te Giver made me feel,
By Kandi Meadors (Ashtabula, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Literature Guide: The Giver (Grades 4-8) (Paperback)
This book was great. It has a lot of feelings in it. I liked how it was mixed up with sad and happy feelings. I think that it was sort of awkward because of how the town was and how everyone lived. I wonder what the author was thinking of when he wrote this.

The choices we make,
By Becca (Claremont NC USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Literature Guide: The Giver (Grades 4-8) (Paperback)
This book is excellent. It explores the futuristic society in which twelve year old Jonas lives. The story is an eye opening experience. It will make you realize just how many choices you do have. The book overall is very good. It is full of symbols, but definetly not over complicated. The ending of the book is very unclear. The book leaves you to pick your own interpretation. Which can be good if you like that. I personally like the ending to be decisive. I want to know what happens to the characters.

My class fellows and I read this book by Lois Lowry 'The Giver'. The book begins very lousy, but the end is very exciting. In this book there are a few persons you should know. The first one is Jonas, the main-character. Later he will be the Receiver of the community he lives in. What is a Receiver and a community? The Receiver is like the President for a community. He knows everything and more, but this you can read in the book. The community is a little village where everything is the same for everyone. In this community you can only have two children and you cannot get them by yourself. You're really controlled and you don't have any feelings. The only person who can see colours and has feelings is the Receiver. I read this book in hope that it would be more exciting, but my vote is only 3Stars.

the giver is a mirror of our future,
By A Customer
This review is from: Literature Guide: The Giver (Grades 4-8) (Paperback)
lois lowry creates a complete different world.in her novel the giver she shows a world in the future with no feelings and full of rules.a boy of the community gets to know the truth about his world, but defends himself against accepting it.in my opinion the giver could be a mirror of our future,if we don't pay attention.in our world there exist so many people, have no feelings and the goverment decides new laws/rules or changes them all the time. the giver stimulates us to think of our world. If we do things in the right way or not,if we have to pay attention or not to get a world which is like the one in lois lowry novel or not,... it wasn't easy for me to read the book, because of the many new words. but all in all i would that the giver by lois lowry is a very interesting book with many new views of a future world.

The book has a very vague ending, which allows me to imagine what is going on. Different people will think of it differently, and I just have to let my imagination flow. It is a very imaginative book which I would recommend wholeheartedly.

I thought the Giver was a very interesting book, which I wouldn't mind reading again. By reading the book it made me realize that there are people who have it worst than I. I am glad that I live in a society which gives me choices and freedom. The book to me was a little sad though because nobody had choices. You weren't even a loud to pick your future spouse. They wouldn't even let you go into a future career that you were interested in. They picked it for you. The book though was good I think.

I think this book can teach us all a lesson,

I thought the Giver was a wonderful book but almost disturbing at parts. It makes you think before changing things and really makes you think about how lucky we are to have choices in our society. i read this for a college adolescent literature course and suggest it to anyone. You can take this story so many different ways.
