5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Resource
This literature guide was recommended to me after I had tried using the Teacher Created Materials version. Let me tell you--making paper dolls and recipes are NOT what my students are being tested on! Once I got this literature guide I threw all my other stuff away--this really has everything you need to teach the entire novel. My kids have always loved this book, but...

2.0 out of 5 stars Not very useful!
I am disapointed with this, because I was expecting something a lot different. There was hardly any literary analysis - just a little on theme (1 page only), and characters. There were, however, good chapter questions, and LOTS of vocabulary work. Which was completely irrelevant. Overall - if you are intending to study "The Outsiders" in order to complete vocabulary...

Let me tell you--making paper dolls and recipes are NOT what my students are being tested on! Once I got this literature guide I threw all my other stuff away--this really has everything you need to teach the entire novel. My kids have always loved this book, but now that they have activities and things to really stimulate their thinking, they love it even more. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! In fact, I just purchased Among the Hidden--I will let you all know how that guide is when I get it. I can't wait!

5.0 out of 5 stars A New Teacher's Heaven, August 3, 2006
This review is from: Literature Guide: The Outsiders (Paperback)
What a great resource! From the author biography, to pre-reading activities, to literary analysis worksheets, to vocabulary activities, I am so pleased with my purchase. I am going to be starting school in a few weeks and cannot wait to use this with my students. It really makes me feel more confident entering my first year of teaching. I have lesson plans already done for me! What a gem!

Teachers, Homeschoolers, ESE Teachers this is a must have if you teach Eng/Lit or reading. Everything you need and for an added bonus purchase the movie. Everything you need for teaching literature or reading is here. Background knowledge, above and beyond engaging activities and discussion materials. The Blackline Masters and extended activities including vocabulary, questions, assessments, writing exercises, literature/story elements and answer keys. Quality lessons for Eng/Reading classes both MS and HS. I used this with High Maintenance students (IEH) which included a mixture of low/high reading/writing levels not to mention emotional disorders. The students enjoyed this and we watched the movie. The students and I had fun naming the know actors:Tom Cruise,Patrick Swayze,Diane Lane,Rob Lowe,Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio (Karate Kid), Emilio Estevez and S.E. Hinton(I didn't know this)played in this movie. Students were amazed of this books timeframe, the authors story and the relevance of this story in spite of it's era. Educators don't pass this up. Use it the first semester or end of the year and experience success! <><

This literature guide really saved my life this year. My job switched just a week before the school year began, and I ended up teaching a different class and grade level than I expected. I had a rather "tough crowd" of students. Many of them had reached 8th grade without ever reading a novel. Since I had several at-risk students, The Outsiders was a natural choice of a book to teach, but I had NO lessons or activities to go with it. I used this for the vocabulary lessons, quizzes, and tests mostly, but it had additional activities. I wish it were a bit more extensive, with more ideas for projects and creative writing, but considering the price, I found it very beneficial. I've purchased literature guides for 3 or 4 times the price of this one, and they weren't nearly as helpful. I highly recommend this one! I've even recommeded it to colleagues and a couple of parents that are home-schooling their kids.

I am disapointed with this, because I was expecting something a lot different. There was hardly any literary analysis - just a little on theme (1 page only), and characters. There were, however, good chapter questions, and LOTS of vocabulary work. Which was completely irrelevant. Overall - if you are intending to study "The Outsiders" in order to complete vocabulary type work, rather than a proper literary analysis, then this book would suit you. Also, I was annoyed to find out that additional material had been made since this book was published, but I had to download it from the internet, and print it myself. I think the publisher should have added this new material to a new edition.
