Literature greeted photography warmly when the daguerreotype was announced in 1839, and they have had a close relationship ever since. This remarkable book traces comprehensively for the first time the give and take between these sister arts by gathering writings about photography and photographs by and of writers mainly from England, Europe, and the United States, but also Mexico and Japan, over the last century and a half. Included are selections by avid amateur photographers (such as Lewis Carroll, Émile Zola, August Strindberg, George Bernard Shaw, Jack London, and Eudora Welty, among numerous others), professional photographers writing about literary matters (Nadar on Balzac, Stieglitz on Stein, Man Ray on Hemingway), and collaborators explaining their work (Henry James and Coburn, Steinbeck and Capa, Capote and Avedon). Most selections are illustrated with photographs and documented by notes which help map this rich field.

Because academic boundaries have long separated literature and photography, Europe and America, and the nineteenth from the twentieth centuries, even the most knowledgeable readers will find surprises here: photos by W. H. Auden, stories about photographers by W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Conan Doyle (both enthusiastic photographers), remarks by and portraits of Mark Twain, who also used photographs as illustrations, and an unpublished essay about family photographs by John Updike. But Jane Rabb does not neglect the familiar. Hawthorne's daguerreotypist, the Virginia Woolf-Julia Margaret Cameron connection, the Evans and Agee partnership, the dual achievements of Wright Morris, and Howard Nemerov mourning his sister Diane Arbus are also included. From Edgar Allan Poe's "The Daguerreotype" to John Baldessari's "Baudelaire Meets Poe," Jane Rabb has gathered the first and last words about photographs and photography.

Edgar Allan Poe heralded its discovery. Mark Twain was quick to take advantage of it. Henry David Thoreau pondered its implications. Franz Kafka questioned its veracity. Few writers have been able to deny the impact of photography over the past 150 years, from Walt Whitman, who wholeheartedly embraced it, to Samuel Beckett--who used it as the inspiration for his only film script--and Allen Ginsberg, who employed it to supplement his poetry. Jane M. Rabb has harvested 100 selections and 169 images that explore the cross-fertilization of these sister disciplines. Many voices in this anthology belong to avid photographers--Conan Doyle, Bernard Shaw, Eudora Welty--who are better known as wordsmiths.

Writers and photographers' original creations are unique, but they can be reproduced an infinite number of times. Rabb (adult education, Harvard) chronicles the relationship between great writers, photographers, and photography from the invention of the medium in the mid-19th century through modern times. Reactions to early daguerreotypes show the frustration writers felt while trying to embrace the new and unpredictable art form. The account of Gustav Flaubert and Maxime Du Camp's rigorous trek through the Middle East illustrates the strain their relationship endured while Du Champ attempted to photograph the region. Truman Capote's introduction to fashion photographer Richard Avedon's Observations (1959) contrasts their styles. The two Avedon portraits of Capote included in this section, taken 20 years apart, capture the writer moving from chic, Fifties literary figure to old age. While the work contains excellent essays from some of the most talented writers of the 19th and 20th centuries, the reproductions of the respective photographers' works are disappointing. Understandably, the daguerreotypes are of poor quality, but late photographs, including ones by Robert Mapplethorpe, have lost both form and contrast in reproduction.
