Book Description

For Composition Through Literature and Introduction to Literature courses. Message: Literature and the Writing Process promotes interactive learning by integrating writing instruction with the study of literature. Its approach utilizes writing as a mode of learning, as a means for promoting critical thinking, as a method for exploring and developing insights and ideas about literary works. The process-oriented instruction shows students how to use writing as a way of studying literature and gives them the tools to analyze literature on their own. This book allows instructors to teach writing and literature together in a single course. The complementary processes of reading and writing work together to improve students' compositional skills and increase their comprehension of imaginative literature. Story: This textbook grew out of the authors' long-standing interest in integrating the study of literature with the practice of composition. Many of their students have learned to write perceptively and well using literature as their subject matter. Great literature is always thought-provoking, always new. Why not utilize it to sharpen critical thinking and improving writing skills? Toward that end, we have combined an introduction to literature anthology with detailed instruction in the writing process.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ideal Textbook for Introduction to Literature, November 9, 2000
By A Customer
I chose to use McMahan's text because it saves me time as an instructor of English. Composition comprises the most significant portion of a student's grade in a college literature class, and this text teaches students how to write an essay about literature from the beginning of the process to the end. I also like the bonus of a novella, The Awakening, which is often taught at the intro. level but under separate cover. Such a deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works for a variety of courses, August 15, 2009

I teach Composition 111 and 112 at a community college along with a Dual Enrollment English class, which combines Comp I and Comp II for college credit, to high school college-bound seniors. Initially, I used this text for Eng 112, and when it came time to purchase anthologies for my Dual Enrollment Course, I explored every text I could get access to. After exhaustive research, I chose Literature and the Writing Process, 8th ed. because it combines writing--the process, the modes, and research--the list goes on and on--with a solid selection of fiction, drama, and poetry. In short, I can use one text for both parts of the course instead of separate texts for the two required college composition courses. If there is a change I'd like to see in the next edition, it would be the inclusion of multi-cultural, particularly Asian, selections.
