Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is a superb, comprehensive, and essential book on the medical and psychiatric uses of lithium."

"This is an excellent and long needed book on the use of lithium. No resident should be allowed to finish training without knowing the information contained in this book. It should be required reading for all psychiatrists who treat seriously mentally ill patients."
Michael J. Schrift, Doody's Reviews, February 2007

"This well written book provides an authoritative and comprehensive synopsis of lithium use in various neuropsychiatric disorders. Written primarily for clinicians, this book should also appeal to interested researchers, psychopharmacologists, and experts in mood disorders. The book’s major strength is the depth of information and the breadth of subject material discussed. In hardcover, the text is attractive in layout and is free of production errors. Each chapter is followed by an exhaustive list of references. Given the amount of material covered and the size of the book, it is reasonably priced." - Verinder Sharma, Canadian Journal of Psychiatry 2006

The book is excellent but unfortunately the seller has a difficult time refunding money on items returned. I would not use this seller again. The item is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cinderella, January 15, 2007
This review is from: Lithium in Neuropsychiatry: The Comprehensive Guide (Hardcover)
This is a very important book dedicated
to the historic and current use of lithium
in psychiatry, as well as to one of its
founding fathers-- Dr. Mogens Schou.
The work is done mostly by the IGSLI group
(www.igsli.org).

Dr. Mogens Schou passed away three days
after the latest IGSLI meeting in Poland, on
September 2005. His dedication to lithium
research never wavered, and during his last
years with us, he worked on a hypothesis,
reminiscent of Emil Kraepelin's scepticism
about taxonomy and treatment of manic-depressive
psychosis-- that lithium could be efficacious
in diagnosed unipolars.

It is divided into four sections:

A. Introduction and History
B. Clinical Applications
C. Pharmacology and Mechanisms
D. Practical Issues

Each section contains numerous articles by
prominent and scholarly researchers who
have dedicated their academic and medical
studies to lithium. Many of the articles
are authored by Dr. Schou.

Dr. Kay Redfield Jamison, doctor and author
of many elucidative books on manic-depression,
including the tome:
"Manic-Depressive Illness", co-authored with
Goodwin, has contributed the Foreword.

The editors, Michael Bauer, Paul Grof, and
Bruno Mueller-Oerlinghausen have collected
articles that have cover every aspect of
lithium. The book is particularly focused
on medical aspects of lithium findings and
treatment guidelines, making it an invaluable
book for practitioners. Yet it is clearly
orgnized and varied enough tht laymen too can
benefit by reading many parts, especially
Part D: Practical Issues.

The books is large (532 pp) and I couldn't
help but notice that it is easy on the eyes,
with its generous spacing and larger-than-usual
font size. It is hard-cover and not cheap,
but worth every dollar as "The" Lithium Guide
for doctors and laymen.

I am very happy that IGSLI members have brought
the Cinderella drug out of the ashes just in time.
