For the Adventorous Cook - Grandmother's Secrets Revealed,
By A Customer
This review is from: Lithuanian Traditional Foods (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful collection of over 300 recipes from the Lithuanian countryside. More than just a collection of recipes, it includes the cultural and culinary context in which the recipes arise, including notation of regional specialties. The recipes require an above average amount of cooking expertise (for example, not all recipes indicate how much dough to use to make a dumpling), but experienced cooks should be able to make reasonable judgments. No western kitchen appliances are referenced, but again experience will guide you. Some recipes are curiosities only (i.e., herring with hemp seed, carrot coffee), but most are doable and worth a try.

I was recently in Lithuania and I visited with family. I bought this book at a local book store but it was 1/4 of the price here if not less. The recipes, however, are great. Half the stuff in there are real Lithuanian recipes that survive to this day and some recipes have history and fun facts that allow the reader to further understand our culture and our history. I would completely recommend it. Every recipe also has a picture, if I am not mistaken. Wonderful!

Being Lithuanian, it is an excellent book to have when we want to partake of traditional Lithuanian foods, which is most of the time.
