5.0 out of 5 stars It just plain works! May 19, 2010

I'm one of the many who moved up from a dying Litter Maid (Mega Elite, in my case), and couldn't be more pleased.

While I appreciated the Litter Maid's positive aspects (it DID reduce cleanup and odor), the negatives had me looking for an alternative solution. I wanted something quieter, and something a little more foolproof. I hesitated about spending $349 on a litter box, but now that I have it set up and in use, I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

The Litter Robot arrived in a box nearly the size of my garbage can. Cats enter the globe and do their thing (in a surprisingly small amount of space), exit, and seven minutes later, the globe rotates sort of like a cement mixer, separating the clean litter from the waste, which gets deposited into a drawer in the base that you line with any suitable brand plastic garbage liner you wish (unfortunately, plastic grocery bags are just a bit too small). The clean litter gets tossed in the process, re-seating in the proper space as fresh as can be.

Quieter? WAY quieter. Cleaner? WAY cleaner. There's almost NO litter on the carpet near the unit since I set it up. Less litter waste? WAY less. The collector tray had nothing but waste clumps in it when I cleaned it (negative aspect: BOY did it smell!) Odor? NONE (unless the drawer is open, obviously). Capacity? I cleaned it for the first time after four full days...and I could have gone longer. This thing is ingenious.

Maintenance pretty much comes down to topping off the litter (I suggest scooping your litter into a large plastic drink cup and just tossing it in) and maintaining the drawer. One of my cats is of the larger variety, and he has no problem with the interior space of the globe. The unit itself is a little wider than Litter Maid Mega Elite, but only takes up about half the footprint length-wise.

The cats DID take some time to get used to it before they tried it (they were initially horrified and 'held it' for about fifteen hours), but it only took one try and they were suddenly fine with it.

I'm REALLY pleased with Litter Robot.

5.0 out of 5 stars buy this!!!!! UPDATE! 12/31/11 October 6, 2010
first, let me say that as i write this review, the base for my litter robot is gone for repair! not sure why, but i think the gear that rotates the globe has just gotten a bit worn from all the use and/or got off track..that being said, even if i have to buy another new one at $350, I WILL DO IT IN A HEARTBEAT!!!

why, you may ask, am i giving it 5 stars? because it is worth it's weight in gold and more!!

here's how it works:
basically, kitty gets in and does her business and gets out.. (there is a weight sensor that tells the unit when a cat has entered)..there is also a silent timer and after 7 minutes, the big globe slowly rotates, emptying the poo/clumped pee into a drawer housed within the base (the litter goes into another side compartment and is returned into the globe on the rotation back, minus the waste).

why i love it:
1) it empties into the drawer after each use (which makes my 2 cats happy to have a cleaner potty each time so they don't have to find a spot to use)
2) i don't have to worry about a mess to clean up after a weekend away or ask someone to scoop litter for me while i'm on vacation.
3) i have 2 cats and i only need to empty the drawer a couple of times a week (compared to twice daily scooping? are you serious? :-) )))
4) it's pretty roomy inside ( i have an 18lb cat and a 16lb cat and they both get in and out very easily)
5) very little odor because the waste is in the drawer underneath the globe.
6) you don't need to use any special litter (just make sure it is CLUMPING litter NOT the pine stuff)).
7) it is very safe and will even stop turning if a cat re-enters the unit after the globe has begun to cycle. PLEASE NOTE this unit is not really meant for kittens because of the weight sensor. please see the company's site for more details if you have a smaller cat or kitten!!
8) the customer service for the litter robot company is great. they are kind of hard to get on the phone (who isn't these days right?), but they do return your call asap!

hope this helps! buy this unit!! it's definitely worth the price tag. you won't regret it and your furkids will thank you! :-) Oh, btw, i bought mine refurbished and it worked purfectly for the first 3 years or so that i've had it.

UPDATE::: Ok, I now have a SECOND litter robot, lol! After reading about cat behavior and how sometimes territorial squabbles can ensue over seemingly minor things such as the litter box, I purchased another unit (couldn't pass up a great deal on ebay for $250). End result? Not nearly as many squabbles lately!

Original unit is still going strong and so is the 2nd. Now, cleanup is down to ONCE A WEEK as each cat has claimed his and her own litter robot. Easy way to clean the globe: thoroughly? Take it to the carwash for a good soap and rinse. Make sure its only the globe because the base has the motor in it and you can seriously damage your unit by getting it wet.

If you are still on the fence about shelling out that much money for a litter robot, seriously, do yourself a favor and get this!!! Yes, it's a little bit of money, but it's worth EVERY PENNY..You won't regret it and you'll kick yourself for taking so long. Trust me, when you can go away for a few days and can come home to a litter box that isn't over run (or worse, find messes throughout the house because the cat stopped using the box days ago) you'll be happy you have it. :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Pricey, but delightful. March 27, 2010

Over the years I have tried many different types of litter boxes in the hopes of finding one that is easy to maintain, while at the same time does not require my cat(s) to climb on top of dirty litter. Units such as Littermaid failed the test terribly. I have owned two, both with the exact same shortcomings. They left small pices of waste in the box no matter how hard you tried to remove it. Secondly, It was impossible to remove the disposible container without getting touching some waste. Third, the waste tray had to be replaced twice a week. Waste trays, and carbon filters were expensive. This was a poor choice for a litter box. I also tried the Scoop-Free system. It was better, except the cat was always walking on crystals that were damp with urine, and the trays had to be replaced every three weeks. Each tray cost about (...).

Out of frustration and desperation, I purchased the Litter Robit II with the Bubble. Folks, let me tell you, it's 'the cat's meow'!! It was easy to set up, requires changing the plastic waste bag only twice a week with inexpensive garbage bags. My hands never touch the litter when removing and changing waste bags. My cat took to it the first day without any coaxing. She never has to step into a litterbox that has dirty litter in it as this system removes 100% of the waste from the remaining litter during the cleaning cycle. Although the initial investment was high, the payback in ease of maintenance and seeing my cat in a cleaner environment is great.

Weigh the long-term benefits against the price, and you may find as I have that this system pays for itself in peace-of-mind, and ease of use. Good luck!!
