the key to zero odor, August 28, 2005
This review is from: LitterMaid Litter Center All-in-One Litter-Box Organizer (Kitchen)
Because of travel I have to depend on automated litterboxes and scoopable litter. The flaw in these systems (one among many) is the litter. Cat litter absorbs odors (clean your box and smell the litter...it stinks!). All these systems revolve around cat litter that sits for weeks retaining and eventually magnifying smells. I don't care what advertising execs want you to believe; no cat litter should "hang around" after the party's over.
For years I've volunteered in shelters and people are amazed that 30 cats can be in a 10x10 room and have NO ODOR. Our secret is CHEAP clay litter (Walmart sells 20 pounds for $1.97). Everyday we dumped the ENTIRE contents of the litterbox and threw in a couple of (cereal sized) bowls full of fresh- 2 or 3 max. They don't need that much; we've just been conditioned to fill the box for the "long haul". When used "our" way litter's not meant to last for weeks so you don't need much or expensive additives. A $2 bag should last a couple of weeks for a two cat box(compared to scoopable that's up to $12 a jug and also should be replaced once a month).
After learning this secret I started the same at home. I kept a kitchen trash can by my cat's box in which I stored that big bag of litter and kept an old CoolWhip container in it as a scoop. I bought the cheapest, off-brand 8 gallon garbage bags to "dump in" and kept them in the trash can as well. People were literally shocked that I had a cat (much less my mini-zoo). MY HOUSE HAD NO CAT ODOR! Even when I had the litterbox closer to my face (while dumping it) there wasn't a smell. (This was before I started to rely on the automated boxes....I've bought them all- including a $400 Litter Robot and I wouldn't give a nickel for any of them. They smell and all fail in one way or another. My cats hate them and so do I. When I'm gone they'd rather use the floor which brings me to my "5 star" review of Woolite Oxy Deep 2- AMAZING!).
The Litter Center has streamlined my routine to perfection and it's what I use when I'm home. Self cleaning units are definitely NOT MAINTENANCE FREE and can be a huge hassle to empty and unmuck (imagine a rake going through soft poop- I've cleaned up some "automated messes" that about made me lose it). This system is so easy, CHEAP, it never smells awful, and best of all- it's never gross.
Everyone I know has converted and this "Littermaid Litter Center" is our staple. Everything is there and in it's place. The pan fills from the unit which is great.
If you're still a fan of scoopable then buy the Omega Self-Cleaning litterbox (that rolls on it's side)...it's the most convienent but it will smell. Better yet, try my system with a $3 litterbox and a $2 bag of litter for two weeks. You'll be amazed at the difference. Once you're hooked buy this center. You'll love it. Honestly, the only thing easier is not to have a cat at all.

We have an elderly Persian cat and the easy entry facilitates his needs. The handy storage of bags and litter material makes for fewer trips to the garage.

Keep it clean, July 7, 2007

The only complaint I have is that you can not really use a litter liner with this. But if you get a good clumping litter and scoop it out every day it is a very nice thing to have. I got this when i was pregnant and it was nice not to have to lift the big bag of litter and pour in the box every time I cleaned it out. And there was room in the little slot for the scooper and gloves.
