5.0 out of 5 stars Blanche is gritty despite the name, November 15, 2007

I recently began to pay attention to Spin magazine's website and its constant listing of alternative music. That's how I found Blanche and their anthem "What This Town Needs". This is authentic music, played from the heart. The growly male vocals of Dan John Miller interact well with Tracee Mae Miller's dusky female voice, and the end result sounds earnest, entreating and yet independent. The musicians are all good and the selections are choice, including spirituals and other root music cheek-to-jowl with ambiguously dark originals. It can't be described in just words (why would it be music if it could?) so go out and listen to this now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice band - nice record.., February 7, 2008
This review is from: Little Amber Bottles (Audio CD)
If you`re already a fan of alternative country music and indierock, you will probably like this album. The songs makes me think of several related bands and artists like; The Handsome Family, Lambchop, Calexico, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, Lee Hazelwood & Nancy Sinatra. It`s a diversified album with its own distinctive sound, well-produced, with many nice songs, which immediately brings me in a good mood when I listen to them. Blanche is really a band to fall in love with, as someone mentioned earlier.

So I`ve already become a huge fan of this album, despite some mediocre songs, which is the reason I gave 4,5 and not 5 stars. In my opinion, the strongest and most catchy tunes are: "I`m sure of it", "Last year`s leaves", "No matter where you go", "Little amber bottles", "World I used to be afraid of" and "World`s largest crucifix". Briefly spoken, this is a strong record from a skilful band. Strongly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Blanche 's latest collection is outstanding!, October 11, 2007

As to be expected, the latest offering from Detoits' finest twangers

is brilliant. A little lighter feel than the first album, but still

very haunting in it's own way. Dan Miller and company are the real deal.

Great mix and production(Thanks Feeney!) Everyone who I have introduced this band to has became an instant fan. Enjoy!!! (If you get the chance

to see them live, make it happen, always a wonderful show!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Blanche., January 23, 2012
This review is from: Little Amber Bottles (Audio CD)
My introduction to BLANCHE came via this CD. I was told that if I'd liked Goober & the Peas, I'd dig these guys. I do! It's not country, it's not rock-n-roll. I guess it's americana. Hints of southern rock and gospel music, dashed in sparingly to heavy doses of country, alternative rock and good, ol' fashioned rock-n-roll.

I don't know who to compare them to. . . they are just BLANCHE. If you don't care what the genre, you just like toe-tappin' music, lend these folks your ear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Musical journey through the 19th century..kind of, December 19, 2011

This melancholic, beautiful album shows how Blanche grew as a band. The lyrics in most , if not all of the songs, are engaging and the music itself is haunting. Too bad they are no longer active.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Second "Album", September 6, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Little Amber Bottles (Audio CD)
Blanche's second album rock's a little more than the first and is not quite as ethereal and spooky. Nevertheless, it is a true gem - just like the first album, and comes from one of the best bands ever. My friend says that Blanche is like John and June channeling through Lyle Lovett - and while I don't know if I totally agree - that kind of description does show that while there are some familiar sounds coming from Blanche - that they have really carved out a sound of their own.

4.0 out of 5 stars I have only heard four songs but I love it, July 28, 2007
This review is from: Little Amber Bottles (Audio CD)
I love Blanche. They're a great band. Dan and Tracee Miller are beautiful and amazing people. If you don't like Blanche you're not human. I love you too Feeny; and Little Jack you're the man for taking the banjo. My god you have no idea how much I love you guys.
