5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER LOST GEM, November 3, 2006
This review is from: The little ark (Hardcover)
Published in the early 1950s this is a novel of the survival of a group of children caught in the Dutch Floods of 1953. Is is a true story of survival. A fictional account this may be, but the research is great and the writing quite realistic. This is Hartog's third novel published in this country and is probably the best of the lot. It takes a few pages to get into the flow of the author's syntax but it is well worth the effort. This is one of those books that has been out of publication for awhile which is a pity as folks are missing quite a good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Little Ark, December 15, 2010
This is an engaging, quick read about a flood which occurred in Holland and the victims who are caught up in circumstances above their control. The book tells the story of two children and their pets, and how their lives were changed by the flood and the people who they encountered on their journey. This is not a children's book, there are numerous gory incidents and indecencies which may not be acceptable or understood by children. The book does do a very good job of bringing out the essence of people and real and raw emotions which coarse through them. There is no brilliant moment of insight or lesson learned, however the book has a good, satisfying ending.
