1.0 out of 5 stars Boring, not my fave art style, March 16, 2008

This review is from: Little Cry Baby (Yaoi) (Paperback)
Unless crying is your "thing", this is one boring book. There are several stories, none of them particularly clear or satisfying. Also, while I believe art is wholly subjective, what is inside the book is far sketchier and less inked than what is on the cover. So, if art is important to you, try to imagine the cover in black and white, lines only and those lines not as firm - that's what's on the inside.

What little "action" happens in the book almost all happens from the chest-up, so if that's what you're looking for, prepare to be disappointed as well.

Bottom line: I picked this up cheap elsewhere and I still regret the purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars A collection of short stories, mostly BL: 3.5 stars, April 5, 2009

This review is from: Little Cry Baby (Yaoi) (Paperback)
This is definitely not the best manga I've read, but I personally like Keiko Kinoshita's art style (yes, it's somewhat sketchy , but that's the whole point: if you liked the art in "Fake Fur" by Satomi Yamagata, you may like this one). Also, I enjoyed "Kiss Blue" by the same manga-ka, and though the stories are overall weaker (it's the manga--ka's first published collection), it's quite similar in style: Keiko Kinoshita's stories are slow-paced and do not have that much of the "drama", but they have some sort of delicate and innocent feel to them, which I overall liked. There's also some character development in the manga-ka's stories, but in this collection, all the stories were too short to get fully immersed in the story and the characters.
The book is rated 16+, so sex scenes are not explicit, but they're definitely "there" in the majority of the stories. My favorite story, surprisingly, is the only non-BL (?) story in the collection, "Raika". The story has a bit of sci-fi in it; it's mostly about father-son relationship, with an interesting yet somewhat disturbing twist: the father in this story was a scientist, and being isolated from his son, he turned a dog puppy into a human child. After the father died, his son inherited the "puppy"-child.
Most of the other stories in the collection revolve around school boys in love, with predictable plotlines. Nonetheless, the manga-ka does have original art and storytelling abilities.
