My Christmas have done a lot of evolving over the years. When I was very little growing up in Sweden, they were a formal affair. Only the immediate family attended, food was served on silver, the tree was filled with real burning candles, and my grandmother made hard caramel candies in little paper cups. When I was three years old we moved to Los Angeles, and my mother tried to recreate Sweden in our home. But I knew we were in America when the actor, Audie Murphy, dressed up as Santa and walked up our driveway through a cluster of orange and grapefruit groves. We welcomed him with warm saffron bread.
These days Christmas is still filled with candles and dinner is still served on my grandmother's china. My mother arranged the Nativity for my children as she had done for me and my brothers, and now my eldest daughter, Natasha, continues the tradition. Traditional Swedish favorites like gingerbread cookies, and meatballs with lingonberries still dominate the menu. And children are still central. It takes us all (kids and grownups!) almost two days to bake the cookies--days during which Christmas carols and the smell of simmering glogg fill the house.
But now, friends join family for an ever-larger Christmas Eve celebration. Tiny, colored lights illumination the tree, and we have added a gift grab-bag. Each of our guests brings an inexpensive (but creatively chosen) present, and these are the gifts we unwrap and fight over (amidst laughter) before dessert. On Christmas morning, we do stockings.
Through my younger daughter Katrina's marriage to Matty, we have also discovered the ritual of caroling. Every year at her in-laws we join their family and friends to sing. This is a simple, loving evening, as much about music as it is about Christmas. And what beautiful music it is.
Holidays grow and change as we do. My daughters' Christmases are not the same as mine were, and my grandchildren's will doubtless be different still. But as we add and subtract transitions, I doubt we will ever lose the heart of Christmas. This collection of stories, carols, poems, and recipes speaks from and to that heart. From the quiet and awe we feel listenitig to St. Matthew, to the tears we shed reading The Birds'Christmas Carol, or the laughter we, share decorating our brilliant (or not so brilliant) cookies, this book is about being together, about peace and love, and ahout joy. These are the rituals my family carries and protectively passes down from generation to generation.
-From my family to yours, Lena Tabori

Christmas Treasure Trove,
By Terrie (Little Chute, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Little Big Book of Christmas (Hardcover)
I love all of Lena Tabori's "Little Big Books", especially the Valentines and Halloween ones, but this Christmas one is my favorite of all. This book is a "must have" for reading to children during the Yuletide season and is a wonderful (and necessary) indulgence for oneself as well. The illustrations have been gleaned from the charming Victorian art of a bygone day and archive the simple, cozy Christmas traditions for us to recover with the turn of a page. 11 Poems, 13 carols with music, 21 stories, 14 recipes, and over 200 illustrations including 55 full color 19th century images make up this delightful volume. You will see the writing of Robert Frost, Louisa May Alcott, Kenneth Grahame, O. Henry, Ogden Nash, William Shakespeare and many others. Read stories from the Bible and also from the pen of beloved First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.I think this book would be worth having for the holiday recipes alone. I have tried several and I found each one that I tried delicious. There are blueprints for a gingerbread house and perfect Snow Icing directions. Don't miss the Vermont Whiskey Cake or Napa Valley Apple Cranberry Crisp. Open up this treasure trove after all the Thanksgiving dishes are done and take a treasure or two out each day. I think you'll enjoy the whole season that much more as a result!

The Christmas Lover's Complete Guide To Reading,
By
This review is from: The Little Big Book of Christmas (Hardcover)
When the Thanksgiving turkey has been cleared from the table, the reader in me immediately starts thinking about great Christmas stories to plunge into for the month of December. How happy I was to find the greatest stories I remembered from the past plus great new discoveries had all been gathered into one book. Not only the best stories and poems, but magnificent artwork, yummy new recipes to try, and carols for family sing-a-longs. This book has it all for an uplifting, feel-good Christmas reading experience. So make yourself a cup of hot chocolate with pepperment sticks (recipe, page 198) and enjoy "A Miserable, Merry Christmas" by Lincoln Steffens(page 210), one of my favorite new discoveries in this volume. Or if you have small children, don't let the season pass without reading them "Christmas Every Day" by William Dean Howells" (page 226) or the classic "Yes, Virginia, There Is A Santa Claus" (page 178) by Francis P. Church. You'll want a copy for yourself and one to give your favorite reading buddy.

Nostalgic, fun Christmas presents come no better. The assortment of stories, music, and pictures contained in this book cover a huge scope. It is just the sort of book to snuggle with as one nurses a toddy and enjoys the scent of pine.
