5.0 out of 5 stars good maps and illustrations, May 5, 2011
This review is from: Little Bighorn (Battlefields Across America) (Library Binding)
This book starts with a summary of westward expansion and the conflicts that went along with that. The white settlers pushing into native American lands, and even pushing native Americans off their treaty-guaranteed lands, gets explained at a level that grade schoolers can understand.

It talks about the Washita battle without mentioning that Custer took a prisoner from that village as his personal concubine.

Seems to show the inevitability of this battle - the huge group of Indians all gathered together for summer hunting, the three Army units converging on their location, the demand that all the Indians return to the reservations and the "total war" mentality of the generals.

There are good large blurb sections on Sitting Bull, Custer, and Crazy Horse. Good photographs throughout. Great index. Good for kids with an interest in the battle; the sections are short enough that they can take what they want from the book. The maps make this handy to travel with, if you are planning to visit the battlefield.
