Welcome to my 1st & probably last review. This is such a scarce album that I felt compelled to share it with you. I got lucky with my copy @ $19.99 around Christmas, but I see that there are 2 copies on Amazon at 150 bucks each. I've haven't seen it on ebay in 6 months of looking........

Cory's influences are many and diverse. I'm convinced that he is one of the greatest living vocalists and there is plenty of evidence of that on this album. On 'Paint it all down,' he sounds like a young Steve Winwood, but The stand out track has to be 'These four walls.' His soulful vocals do not sound as if they emanate from the vocal cords of a white man. As far as I'm concerned, anyone who can tackle this song in front of an audience would need balls the size of melons, but Cory possesses truely great delivery and this challenge presents him with no problems. Let's make this quite clear. We are talking anything but mediocrity here.

Personally I found the vaudeville arrangements of "New Orleans" and "Hang your head" tiresome and clumsy, conjuring up thoughts of Randy Newman & Benny Goodman respectively on acid. Mercifully these are short tracks.

'A Sinners Waltz' could have been the "B" side of 'Knockin' on Heavens Door,' had Cory written it a few years before he was born. It's that good. Conversely, "November 1942" could have appeared on 'Nashville Skyline'. It's dreadful. 'In the Spring,' is another great track. I don't recollect ever hearing a reggee riff revolving around predominently pedal Steel before, but it works for me.

The album's first two tracks, 'Gettin' By' and 'No Better,' along with 'Paint it all down' and 'Change Your Mind,'are the sort of tracks that you could imagine "The Commitments" murdering, or Mick Hucknell's revolting bloated form gyrating to.

What a treat it is to hear Cory Chisel sing these beautiful songs is his amicable way....warm and mellow but also with intimate feeling. What a relief from shouting echo chambered non-voices and background female choruses.
