Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

"If it fell, could I touch it?" Little Bird asks her friend Alfonse while gazing at the moon. This delightful follow-up to Berkowitz's Alfonse, Where Are You? (penned as Linda Wikler) portrays a tender friendship as it explores the mystery of the moon. Alfonse tells Little Bird, "The moon can't fall because it is glued onto the sky. Also the moon is made of Swiss cheese!" When Little Bird sees the moon's reflection in the water, she jumps in after it, setting off a flurry of activity as several big white geese join in. They bring up a rock, a tennis ball and, finally, a Swiss cheese sandwich, of which Little Bird gets only a small piece. But in a most engaging spread, featuring eight vignettes of Little Bird, she celebrates her bit of "moon sandwich," carrying the scrap of Swiss around with her, peering through a hole in it, nibbling on it, dancing with it and at last, sleeping on it. Berkowitz's moonlit watercolor paintings convey, variously, stillness and commotion; her fluent use of brushstrokes highlights the subtle gradations of water and sky. The tale's underlying appeal lies in Berkowitz's clear understanding of the way young children think and use their imaginations to puzzle out why things are the way they are. Ages 1-4.

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1AFeaturing the characters from Alfonse, Where Are You? (Crown, 1996), this picture book falls flat. During a nighttime walk, Little Bird tells Alfonse the goose that she wants to touch the moon. Alfonse explains that the moon is too high and that it "can't fall because it is glued onto the sky. Also, the moon is made of Swiss cheese." Little Bird decides that if the planet did fall, she would make it into a tasty sandwich. Then the birds spy the moon's reflection in a nearby pond and go diving to retrieve it, only to come up with a Swiss-cheese sandwich. Alfonse eventually explains that the moon is not really made of Swiss cheese, and Little Bird now understands that it is really "a big light shining on me in the darkness." There is nothing earth shattering here. The pedestrian text is not redeemed by the pleasant watercolor illustrations. Stick with Eric Carle's Papa, Please Get the Moon for Me (S & S, 1986).AChristy Norris Blanchette, Valley Cottage Library, NY

This book is so sweet! The illustrations are so gorgeous and the story is precious! This was our daughter's favorite book when she was little. Such a favorite that I just recently bought a new one to replace the old one so she can read it some more.

4.0 out of 5 stars My Daughter Loves this Book, November 29, 2001

This review is from: Little Bird and the Moon Sandwich (Hardcover)
We got this book from the library a few months ago, and my (almost) 3 year old daughter still talks about it. I'm not sure exactly what the strong appeal is as compared to so many other books, but who am I to question the mind of a toddler? I liked the beautiful illustrations and it's a good choice for a bedtime story.
