4.0 out of 5 stars Currington's "Bits" Add Up to "Everything", October 14, 2008
Prime Cuts: No One Has Eyes Like You, Every Reason Not to Go, Don't

After a career-threatening vocal ailment, Currington is back with "Little Bit of Everything." And he's in better vocal form than before, his emotionally resonant vocals carries what is to be his best collection of 11 new tunes, of which 5 were co-penned by Currington. With the rest coming from tried and true A-listed writers such as Brett Beavers, Mark Nesler, Tony Martin, Ashley Gorley, and Bryan Simpson. Living up the album title, Currington has a little of everything of the stuff that feeds country radio right now: from R&B tingled rockers, to heart wrenching ballads to fiddle-drenched waltzes. Kicking off the proceedings is the Kenny Chesney-influenced "Swimming Sunshine," a bright summer number extolling the languorous, stress-free life of soaking in the sun in the presence of "girls rocking in their bikini tops." After such a frivolous frolic, Currington turns to some philosophical musing on the "Life, Love and the Meaning Of" without coming to much insights over a pretty average pop tune.

However, the gem here is the gorgeous mid-tempo "Every Reason to Go," a lilting easy-going tune that masks a discreetly mournful story of a man desperately begging his paramour not to leave. Currington's delivery here is simply intoxicatingly engaging. Romance does exhibit its amorous side as represented by the ballad "No One Has Eyes Like You," an uncluttered ballad with Currington detailing his admiration for his lover with a singularly attuned perspicuity. "Don't," the lead single, continues the theme of love, this time at a faster tempo with a 60s R&B vibe. Further, the lure and allure of "Everything" is in its infectious melody, the kind that would continuous spin in your head long after the song is over and it will have your feet stomping uncontrollably.

Not one to be confined just to a mere singer of love songs, "That's How Country Boys Roll" is one of those forgettable testosterone-driven redneck anthems with thundering drums and invigorating guitar licks. Much more impressive is the Bobby Braddock co-scribed "People are Crazy" which strings together some pearls of wisdom over a laidback George Strait-patented melody keyed by a warm wash of twanging guitar and fiddle lines. Currington takes a step out of the safety net with Tony Stampley's "Heal Me," a Gospel-esque love song that showcases this Mercury Records artist's bluesy side.

Three years after his sophomore CD, "Little Bit of Everything" continues Currington's repertoire of well chosen and co-penned songs. With a coverage of topics over the course of the entire record over various tempo, there is not a soporific moment. Though it still has it bumps, Currington is off to another pleasant ride of more hits to come on this new effort.

I love the "fun" in this CD. I bought the CD knowing only the song "People Are Crazy" after seeing Billy Currington perform it on an awards show. The songs "Swimmin' in Sunshine" and "Everything" put a bounce in my step and a smile on my face. The songs "Don't," "Walk On," and "Heal Me" have slow, thoughtful lyrics that complement the lively songs that are my favorites. "That's How Country Boys Roll" has a little Lynyrd Skynyrd flavor to it, while "I Shall Return" reminds me of Jimmy Buffett's songs. However, the sound is uniquely Billy Currington. I look forward to more music from this artist.

5.0 out of 5 stars Major Talent....Unleashed, November 1, 2008
Billy Currington should become a household name with the release of his third cd. The thing that is so refreshing about Currington is that he is not afraid to take risks, often risks that could be career breaking. But he uses those great sultry chops of his and gives us "eclectic Billy"and it all works! Unlike Brad Paisley, Kenny Chesney, and Rodney Atkins who give us predictable, bland, 2 note range country, Currington actually uses his voice, its range, power and timing with a fine variety of songs, radio friendly pop/country, but each unique.

There are a bunch of tunes that are the top of the lines. The first cd cut is called 'Swimmin in Sunshine" that must be pulled as a summer single. It is the best summer, upbeat song to come along in years. This should be a smash..infectious and sassy. "Every Reason Not to Go" shows Billy in familiar country territory that he handles so well. "People are Crazy" has a traditional country George Strait sound to it. And
"Everything" the sort of reggae, country, is the absolute best thing on the cd. This song is just so damn good. This and "Swimmin" are the monster cuts. "Walk On" takes on a bluesy Beatleseque feel, and "Heal Me" is the most challenging vocally for Billy. He does a great job.
Truly, there is not a miss on the album, but there is one weak cut," Life, Love and the Meaning of It" which is just a poorly written song. But even that is far better than most of the pablum you hear on fm country today.
Billy Currington is new country and he does it well. You can tell that this guy loves to sing, because his phrasing, range, and style reveal that so honestly.
