Ex-psychic-ing!,
By Persephone "Just call me Seffie" (Iowa, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Little Bit Psychic: Pride & Prejudice with a modern twist (Paperback)
My Amazon Prime was itching, so I thought I would jump into some Jane Austen fan fiction and visit with my favorite characters. This time I chose a modern and had it delivered with second day.
I was surprised it showed up so fast as I saw this was another on-demand item from Createspace! My first surprise. I've learned not to expect much with these self published stories and when I saw the small price and the small book, I really wasn't expecting much. Second surprise -- I loved it! Even though I spotted a couple of typos, the story kept me interested and I was really getting into what kind of vision would creep up on Elizabeth Bennet next. I was also worried that this would be one of those "sex-scene-on-every-page" stories despite the fun cover. Where there are a couple of sex scenes (or should I say one, perceived first in a psychic vision and then "lived") this is more about how William and Elizabeth's love matures and how stresses of life can get in the way of rational thinking. The story flowed well and was over all too soon, but I must give credit to the author for not weighing it down with too much verbage. Psychic is a pocket-sized piece of P&P fan fiction perfection.

A Little Bit In Love,
By
This review is from: A Little Bit Psychic: Pride & Prejudice with a modern twist (Paperback)
I'm a little bit in love with Aimee Avery's modern Mr. Darcy. If he were real, and I were single, it would be a whole lot more than that!
Avery creates a compelling tale of love in the modern world--with a slightly supernatural twist--that draws in her readers and makes us all long to fall in love again for the first time. My only complaint is that I wish it were longer!

Sweet, enjoyable story,

This review is from: A Little Bit Psychic: Pride & Prejudice with a modern twist (Paperback)
I received this book for my birthday some months back and truly enjoyed it. I've read it several times and I've liked it each time seeing something a little different each time I do. This is a modern retelling with some "twists" that make it different from Austen's Pride and Prejudice, but yet has the misunderstandings that have become standard in romantic fiction and Miss Austen's beloved characters have entered the modern world in a believable fashion.
Elizabeth Bennet has psychic abilities she isn't totally comfortable with. She "sees" her future over and over again, but just can't seem to "believe in" everything she sees. The circular plot helps the reader understand the confusion Elizabeth suffers with as she tries to combine life with her doctorate studies. In this tale, Darcy and Elizabeth have known each other since childhood and, as the two age, find their feelings for each other have also matured causing an embarrassing situation for the older Darcy and confusion for Elizabeth that follows her into adulthood. At 110 pages, A Little Bit Psychic is a light and very fast read. This chronicle of Elizabeth's journey gives us a poignant look at a young woman who hides in her studies until life makes her learn to accept her abilities as well as other insecurities. This view of an intelligent woman suffering with everyday and simple problems is what makes the story so believable. A few happenings try to throw Elizabeth (and the reader) off kilter, but only supply Lizzy Bennet with the odd life happenings that make her look at situations with some objectivity. Unfortunately, and like in Austen's classic, Elizabeth's objective deductions don't come in time to keep her from making her biggest and most foolish conclusion. Though we know the Bennets are American, we don't know exactly where they live. The information isn't really necessary and after reading the story a second time, I imagined they lived next door to me. I don't know if this was the author's intention or not, but I found that little omission something that allowed me to make the story a little more personal. We also don't know what type of business Darcy or Mr. Bennet are in. Again, the information would be trivial, but on the first read I was curious. The second read, I imagined them working in my husband's field; the third read, my father's; then my brother's. It made the story a little different for me with each read and, again, more personal. Like Austen's classic, A Little Bit Psychic shows us a woman with simple problems that can only be solved by living and experience. It's obvious this story is meant to be a quick read with a simple message and not an in depth vision into Austen. As a modern epic, A Little Bit Psychic automatically leaves Austen's world, but her characters are perfect for this type of message. This tome is for an adult reader as it has a couple of mature situations, but I've read it to my daughter glossing over those parts. The lesson was worth the little extra effort. If you're after Austen, read Austen. If you're after a lot of sex, get a steamy Harlequin. If you're after intrigue, pick up a mystery. If you want a quick, fun story that doesn't go into extreme detail about trivialities, but tells a story about someone who could be real, read A Little Bit Psychic. You might just find yourself smiling.

This was a funny little story that just finish too soon for me! It is a creative take on P&P with a great modern Lizzy and Darcy. It was just rushed in places thus making it a very quick read. This book leaves you wanting more!

I enjoyed this book very much, and recommend it to anyone who loves a Darcy and Elizabeth romance. I don't want to give anything away, but I had to laugh when I read who married Caroline Bingley. This story will leave you feeling good.

This is a modern story about Elizabeth and Darcy, who meet as children and teenagers, grow apart and harbour an amount of misconceptions and misunderstandings for quite a few years and meet again to test what potential their relationship as adults has. Although Elizabeth's visions aim at reassuring her that the chemistry is there.
And, indeed it is! The author weaves a modern variation of a beloved novel, which is entertaining from the first until the last page. It is a relatively short story, so those who will expect huge dilemmas, long periods of deceit and prejudice will be rather disappointed, as problems tend to be confronted as soon as they arise. There is no angst for the sake of angst, although Mrs. Avery fully realises and pictures how difficult it is sometimes to say exactly what we feel and how unable we are to read clear messages when our heart, love and happiness are at stake. Elizabeth and Darcy are adorable, and their love and relationship is wonderful to watch. There are some beautiful steamy scenes, both in Elizabeth's mind and in reality! The surrounding characters are great--the author has a beautiful way of portraying Elizabeth's parents, the most misunderstood characters in Pride and Prejudice-based fiction in my opinion. The "bad guys and girls" were so convincing that I felt like slapping them! All in all, this is a tale that will be easily read, elevating your spirits and leaving a quite permanent sweet memory behind. Oh, and great longing for more works of Mrs. Avery!

I loved the story. It was fun and modern. My only complaint is that is was TOO SHORT! I would have enjoyed reading more about their lives, and developing the other characters a bit more. Mrs. Bennett was much more interesting in this version.
I would recommend this book, and only did not give it 5 stars due to the length.

I have just finished reading this lovely book. From page one I could not put it down. I had bought it to go on holiday with me, but it seem to call to me so I took it to work and read it in my dinner hour. I love the characters of Lizzy and William and felt so sorry for William when she left to go back to the states. I was so happy when she returned I think that I had tears running down my face as my work mate said 'It must be a good book as no one has been able to get you to put it down and you haven't touched your dinner yet. Lol. I am looking forward to reading more from this author

It was fun. It's always hard to truly enjoy a Jane Austen based book since they're so amazing so knowing that, you just have to enjoy these types of books for what they are. 'A LIttle Bit Psychic' was cute and entertaining and an interesting (in a pleasant way) read if only to provide another take of beloved characters.

Charming,
By Rachel Anderson "Even editors read for pleasure" (California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: A Little Bit Psychic: Pride & Prejudice with a modern twist (Paperback)
I first heard about this charming story from a write-up in a newspaper and was intrigued enough to make a purchase. I found myself impressed by this self-published Pride and Prejudice modern for several reasons.
1: The price. Taking into account the size and number of pages, $8.99 is a compatible price to the typical mass produced trade paperbacks. 2: The cover. The cover was cute and right up there with publishing house designs. It was well done and contained elements of the story with out giving away the plot. 3: The story. For a Pride and Prejudice fan fiction based story, it was imaginative and not overly erotic as a great many of these self-published tomes are. It seems many readers enjoy a bit of sex in their romances, but there are those that do not. This little story adds the tantalizing bits but not overly so. An uninterested reader can skip over those bits without skipping most of the story. 4: The plot. The plot confused reader right along with Elizabeth Bennet. I was drawn in so well that I felt almost as if I were character herself. Yes, there were errors, as in almost every self-published book I've come across, but I was so delighted with everything else about this story that I didn't care and gave it five stars. |
