5.0 out of 5 stars Voice of an angel, mind of a pretzel..., May 29, 2001
This review is from: Little Bit Special (Audio CD)
This guy is so twisted...he thinks like I do!! If these songs were baseball pitches, they's all be changeups. He starts out with these incredibly beautiful guitar licks, he adds a honeyed voice and words of rapturous wonder to lull you into complacency then...WHAM!!!!...right between the eyes, out of left field, no idea it was coming, you get a double-dose of perversity so stunning, you can't stop laughing in time to catch all the words. So you listen again...and again. And even when you've finally heard ALL the words, you listen again, because you just can't believe it's happening. This guy could have been a serious actor, musician or poet, but anyone with a dose of talent could have been any of those. Not many could have blended all those talents into this one hilarious package; if he comes to your town, or one of his specials is on TV, consider him a must-see. Until then, don't pass by this CD; Stephen Lynch is a rare genius.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even if I didn't want to marry him, I would still love this!, June 6, 2001

Oh, how Stephen Lynch has grown from his humble beginnings on the O&A show...this is musical genius. Every song on this CD is not only stomach-twisting laughter, but it's actually good music! If the subject matter discussed on the CD were a little more "radio friendly," Stephen Lynch would be even bigger news! He is a talented musician with a gift for words. His sweet voice and accompanying guitar work, if played as background music, could almost be mistaken for "adult contemporary pop." Once you realize what you are hearing, the experience is changed for the better!

He poignantly tackles such subjects as dating a hermaphrodite, encounters with a gerbil, stalking an actress, gay attraction to his friend, having only one testicle, his "special" friend, and (my favorite) explaining to his daughter why her mother left them. These songs are not only catchy and memorable, but you begin to wonder if they could have been written from personal experience- they are that emotional and thoughtful.

This is one of the best CD's I own. It is hysterical, musically sound, mildy offensive, and well worth the money. Oh, and if you ever get the chance to see him do a live show, you will laugh even harder. Buy it. Love it. Tell your friends!

5.0 out of 5 stars Offensive, sick, demented... but, you know, in a good way!, May 30, 2001
By
"akwolf" (Pasadena, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Little Bit Special (Audio CD)
Stephen Lynch is a rare breed. He is an oddity among the comedy circuit in that he is not a comedian who plays music; he is a musician who also happens to be a damn fine comic. Fans of the music stylings of comedians such as Denis Leary or Adam Sandler might notice a vague similarity in "A Little Bit Special"'s choice of absurdist topics, but this is where the similarity ends. Lynch's powerful voice and catchy guitar work lull the listener, and the disturbingly graphic visualizations contained within the clever lyrics manage to shock even the most jaded ear. Songs such as "Half a Man", "One Month Dead", and "Hermaphrodite" lack only public exposure to become instant classics; they currently hold a place of honor as cult favorites among Lynch's small but devoted following. "Priest" and "Gerbil" both hold a strong vote for the most disturbing song ever written, and even for the more senstive listener, it is a rough task to find any song on the album that isn't laugh-out-loud hysterical. As an added bonus, "A Little Bit Special" features a few random diatribes by fellow comedian Jay Mohr, delivering his dead-on impression of actor Christopher Walken, made famous on "Saturday Night Live." Altogether, the album presents an airtight comedy package that is not to be missed.
