Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Nora Blackbird, society columnist for the Philadelphia Intelligencer, is worried about her job. Her new editor, Gus Hardwicke, wants to sell newspapers by turning the Intelligencer into a tabloid, and Nora is against using her friends and contacts to write the salacious stories he wants to print. To complicate matters, her younger sister, Emma, is acting strangely; Noras boyfriend, Mob-connected Michael Abruzzo, is going stir-crazy under house arrest; and their pet pig goes missing. When fashion designer Swain Starr is murdered with a pitchfork, Nora investigates to help clear her nephew Rawlins and to gather facts for a story. Suspects also include Starr’s much younger supermodel wife, his spurned ex-wife, and the children who will inherit his empire. With New Jersey wiseguys gathering at the farm to protect them, Nora wonders what Michael is currently involved in, but her issues with her sisters, her harassing boss, and their lack of money keep her busy. Sympathetic, well-drawn characters; plot twists; humor; and the interesting relationship between Michael and Nora keep the pages turning. --Sue OBrien

I have enjoyed(and own) every book in this series and this one is no exception. Nora is really in the middle of a mess in this book- her house is falling down around her, her sister Libby has decided to push her twin boys into acting, her husband/ lover Mick is going stir crazy on house arrest and her younger sister, Emma, is not handling her personal issues in a really adult manner.
Nora is having problems with her new boss a Rupert Murdoch wannabe who thinks scandal is they way to beef up circulation at the newspaper. He wants Nora to get the dirt on the marriage of a famous older designer and his new young trophy wife. Nora is friendly with the discarded first wife. The next thing you know, Nora is in the middle of a murder case.
What I really like about this series is how Nora remains true to her mainline roots no matter what is going on around her. She manages to keep her family afloat and relatively sane through all kinds of crazy crisis situations. Her lover Mick is trying to cut his ties with his mob family without causing a huge blowup. Neither of them have any money but they manage to provide for each other both emotionally and physically. I love the balance they give each other. Nora's sisters cause her so much trouble but in spite of that the three work together to solve the murder with her sisters contributing in their own bizarre ways.
I also enjoy the references to vintage couture and the upper echelons of society and how it works. This book ends with a big open ending that long time fans will adore! Clever Nancy Martin knows how to keep us hooked and anticipating the next book.

Always love spending time with the Blackbird sisters and Michael, and I would have said it was perfect except I really wanted to see Nora tell Michael. I didn't want it tossed out there in a future scene that she'd already told him. It bothered me so much that I wrote a brief scene for myself where she tells him. I know it's not as good as Nancy Martin would have written, but since she didn't write it, someone had to. I'm sharing it with those of you who also needed that scene...

"Are we alone? I mean, really alone?" I teased, running my fingers down Michael's arm. "No dead brothers? No wise guys? No Canollis?"

"No sisters? No mad-scientist nephews?" Michael teased back, slipping his other arm around me and pulling me close. "No editors?"

I shook my head. "We'd better check under the bed, though. You never know around here."

His chuckle rumbled through his chest. He leaned forward and kissed me lightly and I wrapped an arm around his neck.

"I have something to tell you," I said.

"Something good, I hope. I could use some good news." He nuzzled my neck.

"Something very good." I leaned forward toward his ear and whispered, "We're going to have a baby."

He pulled back, shock on his rough features, and laid a gentle hand on my barely rounded belly. "You're pregnant?"

I nodded and the joy on his face was wonderful to behold.

Every time I get a new Blackbird Sisters book, it feels like reconnecting with old friends. This time, it's chaos as usual: Nora's new boss wants to turn the newspaper into a sleazy tabloid, Libby's got another scheme going (this time, turning the Addams-family twins into child stars), Emma is still reeling from the baby situation, Mick's got some mysterious business going on while under house arrest, and there's a pig running loose at Blackbird Farm. In the midst of it all, Nora finds the body of Swain Starr, her neighbor who ditched his family and his legendary fashion design house for organic farming with a supermodel. Nora is pressured by her boss to investigate and dig up the dirt on her friends, neighbors and fellow bluebloods to keep the newspaper solvent, and has no choice when her nephew Rawlins is considered Suspect Numero Uno in the murder. As always, Nancy Martin has delivered a well-plotted, well-written whodunit with a colorful cast of characters and lots of family drama. Highly recommended!

What a great read. Those Blackbird sisters are once again knee deep in outlandish situations. Libby is crazier than ever with her efforts to "provide" for her children's futures. Emma's hurts and fears are ever more guiding her impulsive decisions. But Nora is ever more likeable as she navigates BIG changes at work and at home. This book has enough zany and yet compelling characters to keep you turning pages. I hesitate to comment on all the best parts, lest I ruin any of your fun as you enjoy the book. The Blackbird Sisters Mysteries keep getting better and better!

This installment of the Blackbird sisters series is the best yet. Author Nancy Martin has retained the great sense of the absurd found in previous books while making the main characters deeper and more lifelike. There`s the reappearance of old characters and some interesting new ones including Nora`s sexy boss that adds some spice. A terrific read for anyone who enjoys a lighthearted, fashion filled romp.

I love the Blackbirds! This was definitely the best of the series. Nora and her wild family are so much fun to read about. The only problem is that the next installment will not show up for another year! I don't even need a plot: I could read a whole novel of Nora, Libby and Emma shooting the breeze. I did, however, love how big a role Ralphie played!

For readers new to the Blackbirds: read the series from the beginning but definitely jump right in. They are a fun bunch!
