Book Description

January 1, 1900 3 and up
When a spunky, curious little kitten narrowly escapes being dropped in the river by an unsympathetic butler, she finds herself at the beginning of an adventurous new life. It isn't long before Bo is paired up with a young sailor who promises to show her the world, and she is off. Bo is a good luck charm to her new master, Billy, but more than that, this beautiful amethyst-eyed bundle of fur offers a peek at the world from an innocent, childlike perspective. Permeated with excitement and adventure and capturing the sweetness of friendship, Little Bo is the kind of timeless children's literature one would expect from a beloved icon of family entertainment.

Amazon.com Review

Julie Andrews Edwards is probably best known for her stunning role in The Sound of Music, but the truth is, she's been thrilling readers since 1971 with her splendid children's books Mandy and The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles. Edwards wrote her first children's book for her daughter when she lost a bet--for which the book was the payoff. Now, nearly 30 years later, we're delighted that Edwards has put pen to paper again with Little Bo: The Story of Bonnie Boadicea.

This gentle story begins when Sarabande, Mrs. Edge's champion Persian cat, has a litter of kittens. Not, mind you, prize-winning kittens, but kittens born to the proud, handsome alley cat Bounder. Unwelcome, unwanted, the kittens narrowly escape a watery end--and that's where Little Bo's adventures begin. The tiniest, most beautiful kitten of the litter is named by her father for Boadicea, a fearless warrior queen. But Bo isn't feeling too brave or regal when she, separated from her brothers and sisters on a cold winter's night, wails "a long, miserable cry that came from her heart." Happily, her cry is answered by a friendly, warm-hearted young sailor named Billy Bates who falls in love with her wide, violet eyes.

Bo knows better than to leave his side, so she stows away in the captain's cabin and sets sail with him on the Red Betsy where she begins her life as a ship's cat. Her adventures--stormy and dangerous as they are--make for a sweet, suspenseful tale of friendship and loyalty. Illustrator Henry Cole (of Jack's Garden and Livingstone Mouse) infuses life and emotion into Edwards's already thoroughly charming story. (Ages 8 and older, younger for reading aloud) --Karin Snelson

From Publishers Weekly

Edwards's (The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles) sliver of a tale traces the adventures of a small gray cat named Boadicea, "Bo" for short. Wealthy Mrs. Edith Edge is mortified to discover that a black stray has fathered the six kittens born from her pedigree white cat ("Can you imagine what the ladies at the Cat Association would say if they knew about this," she says). Save for oneAthe spitting image of her motherAshe plans to toss them out on their furry ears. But first, the sextet of felines goes on an excursion with their mother to meet their father, who prophetically names the tiniest of the litter Boadicea: "She was a great warrior queen, brave and fearless." After a few brushes with danger, Bo finds a home with Billy, a first mate on a fishing trawler (who names her Bonnie, "Bo" for short). Though Bo is responsible for several turning points in the novel (a bike collision that saves her and her siblings from being drowned in the river; Billy's departure from the boat), her personality remains oddly undefined. In Cole's (Livingstone Mouse) full-page paintings, which open each chapter, and spot illustrations, his portraits of the kittens are charming. But he often opts for a rear view of the human and animal characters even in pivotal scenes, which distances readers from the action. Still, children will come away with the moral that, like Bo, their size may be small, but they can accomplish big things. Ages 8-up. (Oct.)

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read Children's Book, January 2, 2002

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Little Bo: The Story of Bonnie Boadicea (Hardcover)
Bonnie Boadicea "Bo" is a little kitten born into a family with a loving mother and father, but not to kind owners. She is the runt of the litter, and doesn't eat much due to her small size. Her father loves her, and to make her feel special gives her a big name, but calls her "Bo" for short.

One day it is time for the kittens to leave their mother, and the nice warm house. They realize that they are going to be hurt unless they escape from Mr. Withers, who was supposed to take them to the pet shop. So all the kittens run in different directions, and are soon scared, wet and hungry.

Bo meets a nice sailor and gets into all kinds of mischief with him on the boat he works on, and is soon a sailing cat with a nice home and a kind owner.

This is a must read children's book that anyone, young or old, would enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Julie Andrews is truely magical, March 6, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Little Bo: The Story of Bonnie Boadicea (Hardcover)
As a child I fell in love with the actress Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music. Still an outstanding actress, I enjoyed her recent Princess Diaries, I am continually amazed at her abilities. If singing like a nightingale and acting weren't enough, she has also proven to be equally talented as an author! My eleven year daughter bought Little Bo two years ago with her hard earned allowance money. She couldn't put it down then and frequently goes back to enjoy it over again. She is currently reading it to her five year old sister who can't wait for bedtime now since she so enjoys her bedime story. The only problem is that their eight year old brother runs off with it at the most inopportune times thus wreaking havok! He thought if he could sneak away and read it in hiding no one would tease him. Boys who are almost nine are only supposed to read cool stuff, you know. He, too, found Little Bo irresistable and no longer even tries to hide it. I'm beginning to wonder if Mary Poppins wasn't really a fictional character at all but a chapter in Julie Andrews life. Don't stop now Ms. Andrews. We love you!
