PreSchool-Grade 3-The boredom of Bobo's life in the rain forest ends the day he happens upon a violin. The little orangutan begins practicing incessantly, annoying his family and alienating the other animals. With time and perseverance, however, he makes beautiful music for an adoring audience. Unfortunately, his fame is short-lived-a crocodile crunches the fiddle to bits. Bobo grows increasingly morose until he and his father travel to Uncle Darwin's junk cave and are successful in their quest for a new violin. After a careful trip home, the orangutans are greeted by a dreadful racket?Bobo's friends are learning to play instruments, too. This meandering story is improved by de Beer's whimsical watercolor-and-ink art. Children will be fascinated by the double-page spread of little Bobo descending into the junk cave. The text is lengthy, but may be interesting in combination with Thacher Hurd's Mama Don't Allow (HarperCollins, 1984), a more engaging example of "practice makes perfect."?Lisa S.
