5.0 out of 5 stars It's Little, It's a Book, and It's About God.
Truth in advertising, what more could you ask for? My Little Book About God is indeed little, and avoids taking any particular dogmatic approach. God is not described as an old man in the sky, nor are any particular religions held to be true to the detriment of others. Simply put, God is presented as great and loving, no more. This book was first published in 1956. I was born in 1956 and I had this book as a child. I spent endless hours looking at the pictures before I could read. When I did learn to read, I enjoyed the book very much. I did not grow up in a religious family, and the concept of god that was presented in this book was gentle and, as I look back on it, profound. 5.0 out of 5 stars It's Little, It's a Book, and It's About God., September 18, 2001
This review is from: My Little Book About God (Little Golden Treasures) (Board book)
Truth in advertising, what more could you ask for? My Little Book About God is indeed little, and avoids taking any particular dogmatic approach. God is not described as an old man in the sky, nor are any particular religions held to be true to the detriment of others. Simply put, God is presented as great and loving, no more. Comparisons between the child's world and God's make these points explicit. Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, Zoraster, Joseph Smith and the like never make so much as a cameo, and on this basis perhaps some will find the book too bland. But after all, it isn't My Little Book About How My Religion Is Right and Yours Isn't And You Are Going To Burn For All Eternity Because You Are An Infidel. Certainly devout atheists will find the book objectionable, but there is even room for secular humanists (God might literally be Love, and not a separate, intelligent presence at all) in in this approach. Hopefully most will find it a message of tolerance and love from which their children will benefit--two qualities that are far too rare in today's troubled times.

I am not at all religious, and not even sure if I believe in God...but picked up this book for my kids. Loved, loved, loved the illustrations and the very simple text with an overall message of love and caring.

3.0 out of 5 stars Research Your Edition, March 24, 2009
This review is from: My Little Book About God (Little Golden Treasures) (Board book)
In particular, I loved how god was presented as being present in every aspect of our lives, from rain, to insects, to our parents' love.

I recently ordered a used copy of the book for research I am doing. The used copy is dated 1984. I was disappointed to see that some of my fond pictures were replaced in this edition with what I can only assume are "politically correct" pictures of African American children.

These new pictures are jarring because they don't fit stylistically with the earlier drawings. And, of course, I was disappointed that some of my favorite illustrations were missing. If you are buying the book based on your early memories of it, do the research and make sure you are getting the original illustrations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awe inspiring book for little ones, December 11, 2010
By
My children are drawn to the illustrations and love the story. The illustrated children's eyes are hauntingly beautiful as they explore God's world created for them. It is a sweet, soft story that introduces children to God's creation and His love for them for all eternity. Rather large, complex theological points are made simple for children.

I only didn't give it five stars because when reading out loud I tend to fumble a bit. The prose appears to want to be rhyming, but the layout doesn't allow for it, so when you read it out loud you just can't get a rhythm going, and so you end up stumbling a bit. The edition I have is from 2002 with a copyright of 1984, so perhaps the graphic layout was changed from the original.

This book is a sweet story and a good introduction to God's creations. The wording is a little antiquated but my daughter enjoys the sentiment and the pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars KEEP THIS ONE FOREVER, February 21, 2001
This review is from: My Little Book About God (Little Golden Treasures) (Board book)
This was one of my favorite books as a child so naturally I wanted my daughter to have a copy. To my delight, it has a few new illustrations now [black children are included.]

The wording of MY LITTLE GOLDEN BOOK ABOUT GOD can be at times too lengthy for a preschooler but it adds to the appeal later in life. My two-year old daughter has never complained though, she is mesmerized by the pictures just as I was at her age! Children love to listen to any story with illustrations this magnificient. Way to go Eloise Wilkin! I finally get to thank you after 30 years!

I highly recommend this book because I remember it fondly and vividly from childhood. I had countless books growing up but this is one of only a handful that I remember and that is also etched into my heart forever. Let's keep the little child in our hearts; this is a great book to help us achieve this feat!

But Jesus said, "LET THE LITTLE CHILDREN COME TO ME, AND DO NOT FORBID THEM; FOR OF SUCH IS THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN." Matthew 19:14 THE HOLY BIBLE

5.0 out of 5 stars I love reading this to my daughter, July 11, 2011
I saw this and had to scoop it up for my baby girl. I think the older she gets (5 months old now), the more she will enjoy this book over the years. It will be a classic in our family for sure!

3.0 out of 5 stars This Bombed With My Boys, June 10, 2001
By
Ann Azuma (Kobe, Hyogo-ken Japan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: My Little Book About God (Little Golden Treasures) (Board book)
The text is lovely but needs to be abridged for the attention span of the average preschooler. It starts out fine: "GOD IS GREAT." But when the text waxes poetically about light and stars and ancient mountain tops on the following pages, they lost both my boys. Usually my youngest will at least look at the pictures, but he found the baby doll-faced children, some of them with no pupils to their eyes (at least that is what I think he found scary about their eyes,) off-putting. Perhaps this is better for an older audience (mine were three and five, at the time) -- the message is certainly timeless.

3.0 out of 5 stars My Little Book about God, August 11, 2008
This review is from: My Little Book About God (Little Golden Treasures) (Board book)
ISBN 0307203123 - I'm a huge fan of Golden Books, and not a fan at all of religion, so I was curious to see how the two would go together. I'm surprised to say they work together nicely here. Sturdy board book pages are nice and the medium size of the book is good for small hands. The illustrations by Eloise Wilkin are mostly pleasant, kind of boring, although some are stand-out excellent.

From "God is Good", through to "God is Love", this small book attempts to introduce your child to the higher power you, presumably, believe in and wish to share. It explains, in a basic sense, who and what God is, in terms simple enough for young children.

While religious parents will enjoy the idea of sharing this little gem with their children, you should know that if you're a strict believer in the bible and the "created in seven days" idea, this book may contradict your beliefs with "Think of the snow-capped mountains. Those peaks were crumbling away with age before the first people lived on earth." For those whose religious beliefs are more open, this really is a nice book that's pretty basic. The text is too long for most of the intended audience of most board books (toddlers) and might be more appropriate for older kids who wouldn't want to be caught with a "baby book".

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: My Little Book About God (Little Golden Treasures) (Board book)
I first stumbled across this book in a used book store and bought it when I was pregnant. I'm religious, my husband is agnostic, and we could easily agree that this was the book to read to our child every night to teach him about God. What a loving, simple, peaceful introduction to matters of faith! When the back cover of our used edition fell off, we bought a new copy. When something leaked in our luggage, we bought another. We also bought a copy for my nephew. The original is from the 1950s, and much of the illustration is in that style, but beautifully done; I like, however, how they have added (I can only assume) people of all colors and backgrounds but without changing the style, so it's beautifully integrated without question or making a statement. Just a perfect, perfect book for anyone that wants their child to have a loving view of God.
