5.0 out of 5 stars Simple, yet, effective!
The beauty of this book lays within its simplicity! I began exploring the more traditional Witchcraft books at approximately ten years of age. One was called 'Mastering Witchcraft' by Paul Huson, copyright 1970. I am unfamiliar with any revised editions because after 25 years I still have my original copy. This is how I began my journey down the magickal path; spending...

3.0 out of 5 stars The lite FM of spell books!, April 11, 2000
This review is from: A Little Book of Candle Magic (Paperback)
This is the lite FM of spell books. A bit heavy on setup, light on the actual workings and background information. A positive is that the spells are simple and straightforward, making this a nice purchase for a novice or occasional dabbler. The spells might be useful to other more experienced spell casters who may want to use these as a foundation, or a part, of more elaborate rituals.

Around 40 pages of this 174 page book are correspondence tables, information on herbs, incense, stones, colors, etc. -- so be aware if you already have this material from other sources.

The spells themselves often involve simple activities, such as carving something into the candles, visualizations, or chanting. The spell section takes up the majority of the book and covers a wide range of topics. Some of them are nicely constructed and there are a number of inspired chants.

There is the issue of compelling magick. There are spells for binding people, bringing pressure to bear on an enemy, etc. They are in the minority, but they are included in this mostly positive collection.

The last 27 pages are altar layout diagrams -- how to arrange your magickal tools. There were some very elaborate patterns, as well as simple layouts, which depended on the working. This was a nice touch and a good aid for those unfamiliar with how to set up a magickal workspace.

All in all this is a very simple book, designed primarily for beginners. Since it seems to be constructed that way, it is a shame more magickal and ethical background is not provided to put this into a proper educational framework. The background, history and ethics could have been elaborated on in a bit more detail, rather than providing such detailed correspondence tables, which are available from any number of other sources.

If you are looking for something a bit deeper, as far as working with candles goes, you might want to try Cassandra Eason's Candle Power book.

This is how I began my journey down the magickal path; spending countless hours casting complicated, expensive spells. The 'training' was well worth it as it enhanced my abilities and concluded with me becoming a High Priestess. Still, the more experienced, knowledgeable, and wiser I become the less I find that I need to perform convoluted (or better known as 'advanced') rituals in order to achieve amazing results. You, too, may discover that any dependency on said rituals, as well as costly tools of the trade, vastly diminishes the more developed your own powers become ;-)

A Little Book of Candle Magic provides a brief history of candle/fire usage in religion; information on a variety of candle types and colors; corresponding oils, stones, herbs, incense; how to construct an altar; effective days/times in which to perform your candle magick; a small array of spells that focus on career, love, healing, protection and, oh, so much more! It is an excellent resource for both the beginner and advanced practitioner alike; teaching newbies the basics and reminding the learned that magick can be both simplistic AND potent!

5.0 out of 5 stars *~A Nice Surprise for This Old Crone~*, February 15, 2001
This review is from: A Little Book of Candle Magic (Paperback)
Brightest of Greetings My Brothers & Sisters,

When I first opened the shipment and saw this book I said "That's it?" Upon browsing the book I was pleasantly surprised. Even though most of my candle magick books are far more advanced, I knew this would be a great book for my niece, who is a novice. It packs a lot for such a little volume.

It has an excellent color magick section that not only deals with basic colors, but also with planetary association, astral & zodiac association, days of the week, timing by the moon, setting up an altar, spells, seasons, and the usage of oils, incense, and herbs with candle magick. It even has Azure Green's address & URL in it..lol! (A fairly good shop)

If you are a novice seeking a starting place this book will help you on your path. If you have been around awhile this little book is a pleasant little reference. Walk in Love and Light, Morgana

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent! A Must-Have Book for your Personal Library, March 30, 2000

DJ Conway has done it again. Her writing style is easy to read and follow. Using simple beginner level spells and magic she helps the novice along on how to actually use candles. She offers examples on how to incorporate herbs, oils, and crystals into simple spells. This is an excellent book for the beginner or a more practiced practitioner. Her correspondence tables are a welcome addition to any Pagan Library. The Power is Within You! The candles are only a focus for your energies. I would recommend this book to anyone that is searching for a way to make better use of rituals and candles.

5.0 out of 5 stars the spells really work!, March 1, 2006

Sure this Little book doesn't have all the bells and whistles but it is very simple to follow and easy to practice. You can get your items cheap (the spells don't break the bank) and this little book rocks in regards to spell casting. My spells always work and their really fun to do, a beginner, dabbler or even an experienced person who practices the craft can do these spells and have great results. I especially found the layout in the back of the book helpful, it shows you where to place the items for each spell in a helpful picture diagram.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good convenient reference, July 21, 2002
This review is from: A Little Book of Candle Magic (Paperback)
A nice balance of Eastern and Western meanings in candle magic. It's a good size to keep with your supplies. Non-witches and non-pagans would probably also be interested in the book b/c it is so broad. There's nothing I want to know about candle magic that's not addressed here. You'll find yourself referring to it again and again. I only give it 4 stars instead of 5 b/c I think [$]instead of [$] as a cover price would be more appropriate...
