A little book offers much!,
By Jan P. Smoak (South Carolina, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Little Book Of Etiquette (Miniature Editions) (Hardcover)
This book is very handy in assisting our more modern society with the fine details of everyday dining. There are eight chapters dealing with subjects such as dos and don'ts, table talk, the business meal, eating various foods, a step-by-step explanation of meal courses, forms of service, and more. I love pages 26-27 -- they are probably the higlight of the book: a graphic display of a formal place setting. It is amazing that so much information is presented in such a small book, yet it is not difficult to read. Questions, both large and small, are answered in the first chapter, and the rest of the book gives wonderful detailed information, descriptions and examples.I purchased these books for use with the college scholars I assist on our campus. The miniature size is handy, yet may not be well-received by men who, like the women, enjoy receiving this information. I recommend this book without hesitation, especially when given as a gift to our younger generation.

When I first saw the book I started laughing. I didn't realize the book was going to be so small. When it says a "little book" it means a little book. Once I started reading the book I was amazed. All the little no-no's, I was doing. I even did a class presentation based on dining etiquette, and I used pointers from the book for a hands-on demostration. Our grouped received an A+ on our presentation. Many of my class mates have also ordered this book as well. I really wanted to know more about dining etiquette and this book did the trick.

Well written and organized. The small size makes it irresistible, everyone wants to pick it up and read it. Perfect for grads moving out into the business world as the emphasis is on the applied use of table manners. There is enough history, a few pictures and it is concise enough that even the most hurried can finish reading it in under an hour.

I received this charming "little" book as a Christmas gift a few years ago. My friend and her husband had taken note that I like etiquette books, and they kindly added to my collection. But this book isn't the heavy, voluminous Amy Vanderbilt/Emily Post for my coffee-table-only book. This book couldn't be more portable and is chocked full of great information. Do you know the differences between Service a la Francaise, Service a la Russe, Service a L'Anglaise, and Restaurant/American Style forms of food presentation? I certainly didn't!
(The author, etiquette guru Dorothea Johnson, is the grandmother of Liv Tyler. How cool!) Although I love etiquette books, I'm the first to admit that I don't follow etiquette guidelines to a T (especially in casual company--I'd look a little odd if I did!), and my manners, while decent, are far from perfect. As an aside, my sister had a hardy laugh when I told her I had started reading etiquette books (my first etiquette book was Etiquette Grrls: Things You Need to be Told). She said, "But you're our father's daugher. Why would you read an etiquette book?" (It's a family joke that my dad's side of my family is known to be more than a little crude, while my mom's side is the more refined. Luckily, my sister and I have our mom's side to somewhat offset our dad's genes :-)

Good for Fine Dining,

I also wanted to ring in on this particular book. While it is small, don't be fooled. It offers a great deal of information on eating out, the do's and don'ts associated with putting your best foot forward, so to speak, and making a good impression when eating out. On the downside, etiquette and manners extend well beyond just the dining experience, so as a 'be all and end all' for all of your etiquette needs, I wouldn't recommend it. In fact, you can zip over to the elite manners website and just take a quick look to see that etiquette covers everything from the way you carry yourself, present yourself, introduce yourself, your choice of language, clothing, and mannerisms. With prom season upon us I just don't want anyone thinking that this book is about 'everything'. It is a VERY good book for eating out properly.

This little book is all you need to put yourself in spotlight as an elite socialite. The book is small but chocked full of helpful/useful information. Regardless of the type of event you have been invited to, this book will help you to succeed. It is so small you can slip it into your purse. Everyone should have a copy of this book.

I absolutely love this book, and I literally carry it with me everywhere in my work bag. Though, yes I was raised with the right amount of etiquette and know most of the materials in here, there are a few refreshers which are outstanding for a person in the corporate/work environment. It is amazing how good manners, especially at the lunch or dinner table will set you apart from everyone else and add to your professional appearance. Nowadays, the best use for this book is whipping it out and sharing it with my team before dinner, to make sure everyone knows which bread plate and water glass belong to them!
I highly, highly recommend this book to everyone. Whether you are young or more mature, in the workplace, still in school, or even at home this little gem will add a little extra dose of refinement to your life.
