More About the Author

Michael Ross is an award-winning writer and former editor of Breakaway, a national magazine for teen guys published by Focus on the Family. He is also the author, co-author, and collaborator of more than 30 books for Christian families, including the Gold Medallion winner BOOM: A Guy's Guide to Growing Up (Tyndale), a best-selling devotional for women Faith that Breathes (Barbour), and his current release What Your Son Isn't Telling You (Bethany House). Michael and his wife Tiffany live in Lincoln, Nebraska, with their young son, Christopher, and two cats. Today, he oversees Back to the Bible's book publishing efforts.

Michael studied journalism and art at Humboldt State University. After college, he began his writing career in Los Angeles--where he spent countless hours working with inner-city youth and their families. These experiences sparked in him a heart for disadvantaged teens. In 1990, he co-founded Breakaway (a national magazine for teenage boys). In 2002, he and a team of wilderness guides began taking readers on summer backpacking excursions near Yosemite National Park. And three years later, Michael launched Breakaway's Father-Son Adventures in Colorado. Under the guidance of Noah's Ark Whitewater Rafting Co., these backcountry trips were designed to strengthen relationships between dads and their teenage sons.

When Michael isn't writing or speaking to teens and their parents, he and his family love adventure travel. Their most memorable trip is a safari through Zimbabwe by motorcycle (with a bunch of teens, of course), and then by boat down the Zambezi River. The author and his wife and son are currently dreaming up a fiction series that will take young readers deep into African jungles and zigzagging down churning mountain rivers--adventures they will research together!

During Michael's publishing career, he has written and edited thousands of articles and has interviewed hundreds of athletes, musicians, actors, as well as amazing people from all walks of life. Some of his most memorable interviews include: actors Sylvester Stallone and Stephen Baldwin, director Catherine Hardewicke (Twilight, Lords of Dogtown), teen superstars Jonas Brothers, CCM artists Kirk Franklin, Skillet, and Steven Curtis Chapman, country music band Sawyer Brown, Indianapolis Colts' Hunter Smith, and UFC fighter Nathan "Rock" Quarry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good date ideas, June 25, 2008

This review is from: The Little Book of Great Dates: Unique, Fun and Meaningful Dating Ideas (Little Book Of... (Barbour)) (Hardcover)
This book is actually little (in size). There are some really good date ideas in here, especially if your date is not afraid of heights or water (which mine is). There are dates under $20, adventure dates, long distant dates, and several other areas. It is a Christian based book, and it has some scriptures in it. It has a page at the back of the book from the authors about dating. I would recommend this book for those of you who have problems finding things to do with your date. It is really good.

1.0 out of 5 stars A subpar book of dating ideas, September 11, 2011

This review is from: The Little Book of Great Dates: Unique, Fun and Meaningful Dating Ideas (Little Book Of... (Barbour)) (Hardcover)
I don't even recall where I found this little book, but I was attracted to it because the index said it had a "long-distance dates" section. I got a copy only to find that there were only two date suggestions in the long-distance dates section. Then come to find out nearly all of the suggested dates were pretty obvious date ideas; several of which I have already done, some of them more than once. The book is very small and has so little an amount of space to describe the date that everything seems jumbled and squeezed together.

What really bothered me is that there is no indication on the cover or book description to suggest that it is a Christian book. Several of the dates sound a bit too much like an informal church meeting proceeding.

Here's the entry for a bookstore date. "You'll need a local bookstore that sells Christian products, and cash" Step one: share goals for your time together. Discuss reasons for picking a particular book, and even express hopes and prayers for each other and your relationship. Step two: allow time to pick out books for each other (minimum of forty-five minutes). Step Three: Find a quiet corner-maybe with comfy overstuffed chairs. Order hot drinks and share devotionals, thoughts, and prayers.

I don't go on dates to read scripture passages, give or hear devotionals, or pray. I go to church for that. I go on dates to get to know my date better and spend time together. Even with the limited space this book gives itself, it still take up one whole page of valuable space to put in a bible verse which has little to do with courtship, marriage, or love, and this is done several times in the book.

To be fair, I only saw this book online before ordering my copy. I didn't really know what I was getting before hand, but the content of the book should be evident on the cover or in the books description. Even if you are a hardcore Christian who would enjoy going on dates just to pray together, this book will still be disappointing as the content is very simplistic and obvious to the point that it seems to be speaking down to you. There are better dating books out there that you can gain ideas from, or even just doing a quick search online will give you better date ideas.

3.0 out of 5 stars Eh, not as practical as I hoped, February 19, 2010

This review is from: The Little Book of Great Dates: Unique, Fun and Meaningful Dating Ideas (Little Book Of... (Barbour)) (Hardcover)
My girlfriend and I go out each week, and I bought this book hoping to increase my options for relatively cheap, fun dates. After looking through the book, it seems that most of the date ideas depend on the time of year, and most aren't that do-able outside of a certain season. I am all about doing unusual, fun stuff with my gal, but this book isn't as practical as I had hoped.
