Finally... the Truth About Lipo!,
By Cindy Ross "Knowledge is Power" (Aspen, CO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Little Book of Lipo: Everything You Need to Know About Liposuction but Didn't Know to Ask (Paperback)
It's about time that all women and men had the opportunity to read this first hand account, from an expert, who knows the ins-and-outs of the world of plastic surgery. If only everyone had this personalized dialogue with someone who cared, they would realize how to go about choosing the appropriate doctor and method of lipo.
Thank you, Miss Martin, for doing the research that too many of us neglect to do in making such an important decision. I like your balanced approach and perspective on having lipo; living with lipo and becoming a truly informed patient. You've done justice to your field and every adult should take the time to read this book and spread the word.

Very Informative book! It would be helpful not only for liposuction, but as a surgery reference in general. Martin is brilliant and we should all be very grateful that she is sharing her wealth of knowledge and experience with us. Can't wait for the next little book of ....!

Wow! Carol Martin has stepped up to the plate and hit a home run! Her "soup-to-nuts" approach has left no questions unanswered. Carol's refreshing candidness and acute attention to detail strips the myth and mystery from cosmetic surgery in general, and liposuction in particular. The text is both humorous and comprehensively informative. Sprinkled with anecdotes, pictures and checklists, Carol's book leaves no doubt she is the authority she claims to be. This venture left me anxiously awaiting an encore. Can "Little Books" about face lifts and breast surgeries be far behind?

Not helpful book on liposuction,

This review is from: The Little Book of Lipo: Everything You Need to Know About Liposuction but Didn't Know to Ask (Paperback)
I bought the book, hoping to get copies of it for my patients who are about to undergo laser assisted liposuction. Not only is there very little on laser assisted liposuction it basically stays with the subject of traditional liposuction with a tiny blurb on laser applications.
My practice is an internal medicine/laser practice and the author states in several chapters how careful a patient must be on choosing their doctor and that the doctor must be a plastic surgeon. There are many specialties of doctors offering the procedure and to omit all general physicians from performing it would be to omit many outstanding physicians. The book is too repetitious in this subject instead of just stating her opinion once on physician selection. I gave it to my practice partner to read and stated that we would be unable to offer it to our patients or they would go running from us. It is my firm belief that liposuction has advanced to laser assisted lipo and that qualified laser physicians can offer a beautiful procedure, which is half art, half science. That is, sculpting the areas of treatment requires a keen eye for symmetry and outcome.

The "little" book that packs a big punch!,
By LaRueWorld (Where Life is Good) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Little Book of Lipo: Everything You Need to Know About Liposuction but Didn't Know to Ask (Paperback)
I've known several people who have gotten liposuction in the past couple of years, with varying results and levels of satisfaction. Overwhelmingly, the ones who are the happiest with their altered bodies are the ones who had the procedure for the right reasons, picked the right surgeon and had realistic and positive expectations regarding the outcome. The rest of them wish they'd had "The Little Book of Lipo" before they had the surgery so they could have made sure they had all their bases covered as well!
Ms. Martin's book a must-have for anyone considering lipo. The author takes you, step-by-step, through everything you need to know, ask or think about before you have a surgeon suck fat out of your body...and in a very down-to-earth and entertaining manner to boot. Having a cosmetic procedure such as liposuction is not something to be taken lightly. It is surgery and as such, it needs to be thought out, researched and contemplated from all angles before the decision to proceed is reached. Any elective surgery is expensive and there are no guarantees for success. But with "The Little Book of Lipo," you are much more likely to get the results you desire because you will be educated, prepared and primed for success. Now, finally, I can start looking for three surgeons to interview and kiss my thighs goodbye...forever! Thank you, Carol!

Ms. Martin approaches this topic professionally while interjecting candid humor. Her eye opening comparisions of the many tricks of the trade are amazing. I feel so much more informed about the process of lipo and will now consider this a viable alternative without the reservations I had before reading the book.

I was a little disappointed to find out that this book had not been written by a plastic surgeon as had Stephanie Snodgrass' book When Less Is More : The Complete Guide for Women Considering Breast Reduction Surgery. The Snodgrass book was immensely helpful for me in preparation for bilateral reduction mammoplasty. Nonetheless Carol Martin's book did have some good information I found useful.
While nearly a third of this book --the fourth section--Doctors...Physicians...Surgeons..Oh My! Let's Take the "Doc" Off His Pedestal--- had only to do with how to select the best doctor (a decision I had already made) later sections of the book were extremely informative. In particular I loved the sixth section--Fat be gone! Lipsuction and what it can do--and the seventh section--"It's Been a Week..Why Don't I Look More Normal. Here the author describes the different types of liposuction, where they can be performed, what types of anaesthesia can be used and what results can be expected. The photographs she provided on liposuction with chin implants, liposuction of the arm, upper body and lower body were very helpful. In this sixth section the author very clearly instructs the potential patient how to prepare, how will they look and feel after surgery, what else to know about their recovery, what are the possible risks and estimated costs of the procedure. I also like the fact that the author does not overglamorize liposuction surgery. In the seventh section she instructs on how the postoperative liposuction patient can best take care of themselves after the procedure. I think it is important that anyone having liposuction be anticipative of the bruising and swelling that comes as a result of the surgery. It is indeed important to give the body what it needs in the wake of such a procedure. Very helpfully the author makes recommendations to the patient about such things as how to get in and out of bed, showering and bathing, eating properly and getting back on your feet in general. I disagree with the author when she states that "Compression garments may take a little getting used to but can be quite comfortable." After having abdominal lipoplasty in May 2011 I can honestly say that the compression garment I was placed into directly after surgery was one of the most UNCOMFORTABLE articles of clothing I have ever had to wear. My doctor placed me in one which covered me from the bust line to mid thigh. It had zippers on the sides and a crotch opening. You were to wear it 24/7. Well after just a couple of weeks my legs felt like they had been constricted by tourniquets. Even the plastic surgery clinic nurse noticed blood flow seemed to be impaired by this. The solution was to cut into the garment where the legs were. This did not, however, help much and only caused the discomfort to "go north". Another solution was to switch to a SPANX high-waisted panty. I liked this much better. I was still uncomfortable around the abdomen but the purpose of compression (to reduce swelling) was not compromised and my legs could BREATHE! On page 136 of this book the author gives several examples of compression garments. I think doctors would be wise to consider alternatives rather than placing all patients in "one type of compression garment fits all" solution. Although this book was not written by a physician, the individual who wrote it is very knowledgeable and has been herself a patient of several liposuction procedures. It is for this reason, therefore, that I would recommend it to those considering having liposuction surgery.

I'm a male and for some time I have been considering having liposuction. I know there are plenty of sucessful results, and I have heard the stories of disasters as well. I have been overly cautious in making the decision to move forward. I have some fat pockets that I do not want to live with if I dont have to. I learned more from The Little Book of Lipo than I had gleaned from reading hundreds of websites, surgeons brochures, or visting with docs in their office for consultation. This book tells it all, including plenty of information I had not even thought to consider. I still have made no decision, but I am now informed. The book is a great little read for anyone considering the lipo procedure.
