Book Description

August 9, 2011 Little Books. Big Profits (Book 33)
How to get past the crisis and make the market work for you again

The last decade has left people terrified of even the safest investment opportunities. This fear is not helping would-be investors who could be making money if they had a solid plan. The Little Book of Trading teaches the average person rules and philosophies that winners use to beat the market, regardless of the financial climate.

The market has always fluctuated, but savvy traders know how to make money in good times and bad. Drawing on author Michael Covel's own trading experience, as well as insights from legendary traders, the book offers sound, practical advice in an easy to understand, readily digestible way. The Little Book of Trading:

  • Identifies tools, concepts, psychologies, and philosophies that keep people protected and making money when the next market bubble or surprise crisis occurs
  • Features top traders in each chapter that have beaten the market for decades, providing readers with their moneymaking knowledge
  • Shows how traders who beat mutual fund performance make money at different times, not just from stocks alone

Most importantly, The Little Book of Trading explains why mutual funds should not be the investment vehicle of choice for people looking to secure retirement, a radical realization highlighting the changed face of investing today.

Q&A with Author Michael Covel
Author Michael Covel
What is trend trading?
Trend following is a very straightforward trading strategy that ignores fundamental information to buy and sell in all markets. For example, pretend you have no idea what way a market will go or for how long. Trend followers simply say that if Apple is trading at price level 300 and it starts to go higher -- buy Apple. Why would you do this? If Apple is going up you want to be on board. Period. No one knows how high or low Apple may go, but if it goes from 300 to 400 you do not want to miss out -- even if 300 feels like too high of a price to buy in at. Buying low or cheap is not the goal.

After you buy, if it goes the other way and you start to lose money – you get out. How do you know to get out? Trend followers abide by certain universal and timeless rules that go back 100 years. If you lose a small amount of money due to the trend not going your way, you get out. The key to keeping that loss as small as possible is admitting defeat. That is how you preserve capital while waiting for the next big unpredictable trend to arrive to make you money.

Why do you recommend a trend following strategy over a more traditional form of trading?
Here is the great thing about trend following: you do not need to be knowledgeable of the fundamentals that a stock or a commodity consists of to make money from them. You do not need to know how great the demand will be for the next iPad. You do not need to know how far gold will go up, or down, or why. That information is irrelevant. The only variable necessary to understand, so you can make money, is which way the market is trending and if you are on board, up or down, in that direction. This puts you on a much more even playing field with banks and hedge funds, who clearly have more fundamental insight than you could even dream of amassing.

Also, unlike mutual funds, trading trends for wealth building means you can make money when the market goes up or the market goes down. This is a huge advantageous distinction from most other strategies being used in the markets.

Who can benefit from reading The Little Book of Trading?
Any individual, regardless of whether they are currently trading or not. The Little Book of Trading is for those who are open and willing to learn a different, less conventional way of making money. It is for those who are curious how some of the top traders are profitably thriving during these uncertain times. It is a road map for an uncertain future.

During the course of writing the book, you spoke to a lot of different traders. Is there one piece of information that stands out to you from your conversations?
If you learn anything from my Little Book, let it be the simple lesson: stick with it. There will always be distractions; breaking news banners, surprises and unpredictable chaotic events, but you cannot be fazed. The biggest lesson these top traders pounded into my head, and wanted me to pass onto the readers, was that they do not pay attention to any of that stuff. They have found through hard work, diligent study, and perhaps putting a little luck on their side – that their ability to stick with a trading plan is far more important than knowing or worrying what their neighbor is doing, what the Fed will do next, or if it is raining or snowing on some obscure rice plantation, in some random country.

What one piece of advice would you give to someone looking into trend following?
Do your homework. This is not buy and hold—where you buy and forget it. You have to have a set strategy going in that gets you and gets you out, otherwise you will get taken for all your worth (i.e. 2008). If this means that you have to practice trade for a period of time to wrap your arms around all of the details, then so be it. You cannot stick to a strategy that you do not have, so lay a smart foundation.

What is so wrong with mutual funds, anyway?
The investing world has become seduced by the idea that you can buy and hold a mutual fund for a lifetime, rewarding you with a huge nest egg when retirement sets in. Just buy and hope and forget about it they tell us. That pipe dream has been sold by a mutual fund marketing-machine and they hire serious lobbyists in Washington, DC. to keep you “in line”. However, mutual funds have gone over a decade with no returns, while simultaneously mutual funds owners have made billions on fees. How smart does that sound for you? More importantly, what happens when the next bubble pops? What happens if the government cannot blow the bubble back up? That is the million-dollar question and the question that decides how much money you will earn over your lifetime.

“The latest addition to the ‘little book big profits’ series, Michael W. Covel’s The Little Book of Trading: Trend Following Strategy for Big Winnings looks at the financial world through the eyes of successful trend traders … What Covel stresses throughout the book are the accompanying principles that make trend following viable: stick to your plan and manage your risk through diversification, stop placement, and position sizing. These are important principles for any kind of trading, but for trend following they are critical … Successful trend following traders try to capture the outliers, the really big moves that more than compensate for the many small losses they take. This goal requires traders to have confidence in their systems and confidence in themselves. By introducing the reader to successful trend traders, Covel believes that some of their ‘magic’ just might rub off.”

More About the Author

Michael Covel passionately teaches the lessons of the great traders who have made their fortunes over the last four decades. Forget Buy and Hold and CNBC; those are not Michael's game. His subject of choice is an obscure trading style called 'trend following trading' that has produced untold millionaires and a few billionaires. It is a style of trading ignored by the mainstream press, all universities and much of Wall Street. Michael is now considered the point person on trend following trading.

In 1996 Michael co-launched a website titled TurtleTrader.com®. It has attracted millions of visitors and thousands of clients all looking for insights into trend following trading. The journey to uncover the secretive world of the most successful money makers around, cracking their 'code' so to speak, honed Michael's investigative skills and built TurtleTrader.com®.

Following on the success of TurtleTrader®, Michael's first book Trend Following: How Great Traders Make Millions in Up or Down Markets (FT Press, Apr. 04, Nov. 05, Feb. 07 and Feb. 09) hit the streets. It profiled great trend following traders and explained trend following in print for the first time. It quickly became a bestseller and has sold over 100,000 copies. It is available in German, Japanese, Chinese (Complex and Simplified), Korean, French, Arabic, Turkish and Russian. The book struck a chord with individual and professional investors alike.

Michael's second book The Complete TurtleTrader: The Legend, the Lessons, the Results (Collins, Oct. 07 and Feb. 09) is different. It is the definitive behind the scenes look at a real life trading legend. It is a narrative account of super-trader Richard Dennis and his student traders nicknamed the 'Turtles'. You think trading success only happens for people born with a silver spoon? This book will prove you wrong! It is the true story of nurture trumping nature and has become an inspirational lynch-pin for tens of thousands.

Following his two books Michael directed his debut documentary film Broke. It premiered on 'The Documentary Channel' in October 2009. It explores human behavior (read: behavioral finance) during the 2007-2009 market crash. It is Michael's 75,000 mile odyssey through a Tokyo fish market, a Virginia sheep farm, a lottery store and Las Vegas and Macau poker tables all to learn how and why we make so many wrong financial decisions.

Michael and his team shot the film in 13 major cities and packed it with big time names in the trading world (Larry Hite, Jim Rogers, David Harding, Mark Mobius, and Bill Miller to name a few). Michael also conducted face-to-face interviews with legendary Nobel Prize winners Dr. Harry Markowitz and Dr. Vernon Smith. Michael's film is a non-partisan, timeless and common sense message that everyone can embrace.

5.0 out of 5 stars If You Want Someone to Design a System for You, Look Elsewhere, August 9, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I think the dichotomy of opinion in these reviews pertains more to expectations than anything else. If you are looking for specific trend following systems that are turnkey in nature, this book won't help. The fact is, however, that there are literally thousands of ways that a person could design a trend following system and all of them would work if you follow the advice of the traders discussed in this book. It is not for lack of a system that investors fail, it is generally the result of letting emotions get the best of you. One of the main premises of Michael Covel's books is that we can all be victimized by our evolutionary psychology to make stupid trades that will eventually bankrupt us. This book is a roadmap out of the never-ending Buy and Hold, Average Down Investment Loop that makes stooges of us all. You don't have to be a math professor to be successful at Trend Following. You just have to focus on what markets are communicating in the here and now by virtue of prices and their general trajectory... Simple to understand, but hard to implement without a steely resolve to follow the trend. Let your losers go early and let your winners run.

This review is from: The Little Book of Trading: Trend Following Strategy for Big Winnings (Little Books. Big Profits) (Hardcover)
Got the book before a long flight. Purchased along with the the Trend Commandments. Loved both of them. They were different - but similar at the same time. I breezed through the Little Book. For some reason I enjoy the interview format - hearing from other traders shows me that we all put our pants on the same.

Great read, highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Little book but packed full of insights!!!, July 27, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Knowing what you want! If you get anything out of this book, that should be it. Covel's interviews successful traders to produce another mind blowing adventure into the lives of traders.

Each of the people featured - and there were 11 - were clear on what they wanted out of trading. I can recall recently being in a market at was so hung up in being right that I made stupid mistakes. In the end I was right, but spending thousands to average a price down to make a few hundred is a great way to go broke. What I should focus on is profit, not my ego.

That was the lesson for me from the book. Each of the profiled traders are clear that they want to make money. For them a systematic method - one which eliminates emotions - was the best way. That is powerful. Here are traders managing millions and in some cases billions of dollars. Following a system keeps their emotions at bay - it is a built in check and balance system.

One of my favorites was the chapter on Kevin Bruce. Kevin has traded his entire adult life to create a personal fortune (very close to my age!). That is inspirational - dedication and persistence shown in tremendous reward.
