4.0 out of 5 stars A ghoulish idea!, May 19, 2006

This review is from: Little Box of Horrors (5 CD / 1 DVD Box Set) (Audio CD)
Having just discovered Wednesday 13 a year ago with his debut solo album I have been eagerly trying to purchase his older material. For reasons I really don't know why, I waited on ordering any of the Frankenstein Drag Queens from Planet 13 albums on amazon. I am glad I waited because when I saw this box set I jumped all over it.

This set contains all four of the Drag Queens albums, a disc containing demos and rarities, and a dvd with some old live footage. For about $46 dollars this is a very good deal. I had never heard any of the FDQFP13 material before, but enjoying the Murderdolls and Wednesday's solo album I was sure I would like their albums.

After a full listen to all the discs I find them to be a ghoulish rock and roll ride. I do however think that Wednesday is just getting better with time because the Murderdolls and his solo album are better than these. But they are earlier works so it's to be expected. I didn't realize that a good portion of the Murderdolls album is old FDQFP13 material re-recorded some with different titles. All the Murderdolls versions are better but the originals are cool too because they have a much more raw and unclean feeling which works for this style of music.

Each album in the box gets better as one can hear how the band is increasing their skills and learning more about putting a record together. The dvd is neat to have but could have been done a bit better. First of all it was just recorded with someone's hand held movie camera so the sound is not very good at all plus the camera angles are all the same and color is muddy. I can get past all that because I realize the band is only 2 years old at the point when that show was recorded and still very underground. What I have a hard time with is the show is edited. There is only 9 songs done and one can tell that some of set was taken out. I don't know why they just didn't include the whole show.

As a whole I am very satistfied with this set. I would recommend it to anyone who is a fan of Wednesday 13 and doesn't have any of his earlier work. Be advised that although the albums are remastered very well they are of his earlier work and they are not as well produced as the Murderdolls and his solo album. A nice group of albums all in all.

Stay Scared and Rock on!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Long Time Coming, August 2, 2006
This review is from: Little Box of Horrors (5 CD / 1 DVD Box Set) (Audio CD)
This boxset has been a long time coming. But, was it worth the wait? ABSOLUTELY!! The Little Box Of Horrors compiles all 4 of the FDQ cds, along with an expanded rarities disc and a DVD. Now, there are some downsides to the boxset, which will disappoint very little. First, the positives. You get all 4 of the FDQ Cds in one shot. No need spending hundreds of dollars ( like me) to find good quality copies of these cds. Plus too, the Rarities cd contains things that wasn't even on the original Rare Treats cd that the band released, and a few of the tracks, even the die hards ( such as myself) haven't even heard until now. Double devil horns to Wednesday for putting together such a collection. Now,the bad side. First of all, while Wednesday did clear out the vault with this release, there are two songs missing- "Chop Off My Hand", and "Hey Mom, I just killed a chicken". The other downside is the dvd. The title of the dvd is Transvestite Chainsaw Massacre. That particular title WAS released through the band on VHS and available at shows and through mail order. However, the DVD is not the full show and only "highlights" of the video. Why Wednesday didn't put on the full show, or even the music videos that FDQ has done throughout the years, I don't know, but would like to find out. Perhaps with the success of this release, they will re-release all of the old VHS tapes on DVD, or even put out a new FDQ cd, and have the 2 missing songs as bonus tracks. This boxset was also released limitedly overseas through a different company, along with different artwork and a booklet. Here's to the future of the FDQ's. May they not rot away anytime soon.

I was a bit skeptical at first because I was first introduced to the Drag Queens after I got into Murderdolls but this box set is completely amazing and worth every penny.

This Boxset is a MUST have for ANY FDQ fan and all thos just getting into the band, it spans their 10year history and the "Story/History" that Wednesday wrote himself is great.....I personally LOVE the Rare Treats disc the best, was alittle dissapointed with the DVD, i was really looking forward to seeing the full Transvestite Chainsaw Massacre show not just 9 songs out of the set...I mean who wouldnt want to hear FDQ playing "Welcome To My Nightmare", or hear the classic "Whoop-D-Goddamn-Da-Doo" live.

I give this Boxset a 5/6...due to the dissapointment of the DVD

If you're a W13 fan, this 5 disc set is well worth it. I already own the previously released stuff, but this is great. Rarities and obscure mixes, its great to hear how the songs have evolved. The DVD is a video camera in a club, but you gotta love seeing FDQ rock out. A must for all Wednesday 13 fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars bad. ass., December 24, 2010
This review is from: Little Box of Horrors (5 CD / 1 DVD Box Set) (Audio CD)
I'd seen this boxed set yearrrrs ago at FYE and thought it looked epic. However, the price through me off a bit haha [I was only in high school and didn't make much at my job] I saw it again recently at the same FYE and figured that there was a good chance it was the same exact one I'd picked up years ago. I convinced Boyfriend to give me half the money for it and bought it right then. Listened to it in the car nonstop after that. It is a FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC collection.
My car was broken into yesterday during my christmas shopping at the mall and they took all the stuff i had just bought and almost all of my cds, which included every wednesday 13 cd and all the murderdolls [the thieves left the burlesque soundtrack though. ha.] but luckily i had put the FDQ set in the back seat and when I had been driving the cds slid out and went under the two seats so they managed to stay hidden :D pretty good luck I think. And a pretty damn good collection, well worth the money.

This box set is simply amazing, there is no other way to describe the range of sound in the 5 albums and DVD included in this atrociously kewl box. The 5 CD's have every song ever put out by the FDQ as well as alternative and live versions all packaged in very suiting green jewel cases. The DVD is just a fantastic live show that can be seen as a purely blasphemous, anti-establishment and bad ass rock show. Included is a surprisingly good cover of Ozzy Ozbourne's "Bark at the Moon" and great classics like "197666" and "RAMBO."
Even if you have never heard of FDQ and only have heard Wednesday 13's later stuff, this album will warp you. That's not to say you will not enjoy every minute of it.
A MUST BUY FOR ANY DEATH ROCK/HORROR ROCK/SHOCK ROCK FAN

5.0 out of 5 stars Murderdolls, plus so much more, July 3, 2006
This review is from: Little Box of Horrors (5 CD / 1 DVD Box Set) (Audio CD)
if you're a fna of the murderdolls or wednesday 13's solo work, this boxset is perfect for you. as you listen from the first disk to the last, you can see how wednesday has evolved over the years. it starts off raw and gritty, but leads into darker, and much more creepy music that shows he was heading straight to transylvania 90210. also, you discover just about every murderdolls song was a FDQ song, or part of one. the DVD is great addition, sinse there is a slim chance of catching them live any time soon.

overall it's a great, dark, sick and funny purchase. 5 stars for sure!
