Review

Excellent source. Concise insights from someone who knows governmental budgeting. -- Western Governmental Research Association Quarterly, January 1994

This book serves as a technical guide and reference for those involved or interested in local government budgeting. The 7 1/4 x 4 1/2-inch loose-leaf bound publication is divided into five sections: Budget Overview, Preparing Budgets, Analyzing Budgets, Budget Savvy And Budget Techniques. The author uses his two decades of budgeting experience to present definitions, facts, policies, issues, problems and words of wisdom. This book provides useful information for the first-year budget analyst, as well as the seasoned budget manager, on budgeting trends, different budget types, program goals and objectives, performance measures, budget analysis and evaluation, budget controls, budget forms, budget presentations to elected officials and trend analysis. -- Government Finance Review, December 1993

From the Author

I enjoy the management aspects of budgeting and in the Little Budget Book, I reveal the secrets of savvy budgeters gained from several years of preparing, analyzing and critiquing public agency budgets. My intent was to create a quick read, handy reference source that contains the important budget concepts. The most frequent comment I get about this book is that it is oneof the best, if not the best, in its subject area. The Little Budget Book is being or has been used as a primary or secondary text by several Universities including the University of Southern California, University of Illinois, Indiana University, North Carolina State University, University of Rhode Island, University of California, Berkeley, University of Iowa and the University of British Columbia.

I use this book for teaching university level courses in budgeting and finance for government officials. It has been very well received and I urge all government officials to read this exceptional primer on governmental budgeting. Highly recommended.
