Grade 3-5?A realistic fantasy about a legendary sea creature. Bobby and his sister Gina are spending the summer with their grandparents on Lake Champlain. One day, they see a baby plesiosaur and its mother off the jetty, and are enchanted by the gentle and huge dinosaurs. Weeks of searching with their excited grandfather fail to produce a second sighting, and they are taunted by skeptical locals. Then one afternoon the children row out into the lake, where they spot the two creatures. They follow them, ignoring the storm clouds. A desperate run to shore fails when they run out of gas; a rescue by their grandfather fails when he runs aground on a sandbar. Stranded and waiting for help, they are nudged loose by "Little Champ" and his mother, and decide not to share their experience with others. This is a pleasant, readable adventure, loaded with appeal for children who enjoy the wonders and possibilities of nature. Arnosky's style is a little stiff but the likable characters and straightforward narrative, combined with the descriptions of the natural settings, make this a solid choice for fiction collections.?Anne Connor, Los Angeles Public Library

Gr. 3^-5. Arnosky draws his inspiration for this engaging fictional account of the legendary monster of Lake Champlain from the prehistoric plesiosaur, an aquatic reptile. Visiting their grandparents on Lake Champlain, Gina and Bobby are amazed when they spot gentle Champ and her baby searching for food in a cove. Joined by their grandfather, a longtime believer, they spend the next several weeks cruising the lake in hopes of another sighting. Complete with skeptical bullies and a near disaster at sea, the adventure is bound to satisfy the hordes of kids intrigued by the Loch Ness monster. In addition, readers will benefit from several well-written natural-science lessons. In an afterword, Arnosky discusses his research and subsequent speculation that results in the book's matter-of-fact tone regarding the beasts' existence. The final copy will include full-page pencil drawings.
