Fans of Little Critter will be in hog heaven here with Mayer's latest outing, a series of half a dozen escapades featuring the furry hero, all thoughtfully designed for beginning readers. The stories are culled from the pages of everyday life, and focus on events and situations familiar to every young reader--sibling rivalry, a birthday party, friendship, the first day of school, a sleep-over and so on. Mayer's greatest strength is the dry, understated humor he injects into his work, humor that is not entirely lost on young readers and that adults lassoed into read-aloud sessions will thoroughly appreciate. Here, the text plays straight-man to his waggish illustrations. One scene, for example, depicts a clearly beleaguered schoolbus driver chauffeuring a busload of raucous critters: "The bus is full. The driver is quiet. But we are not. We are having fun." Mayer's illustrations are straight out of Norman Rockwell Critterland, and although one might quibble with the gender stereotypes that are reinforced (mom rarely appears without an apron; little sis prefers dolls to anything else), this is outweighed by the good-natured warmth and sheer fun of the six stories. Staccato sentences and a carefully selected vocabulary make this collection just the ticket for enticing fledgling readers. Ages 5-7.

More About the Author

Mercer Mayer has been writing and illustrating children's books for over 35 years. He began the popular Little Critter series nearly 30 years ago and titled the first book Just for You. His wife, Gina, has been co-writing the series since the early 1990s. The books in this series address the major issues of growing up through humorous storytelling.

Little Critter's Read-It-Yourself Storybook contains six of Mercer Mayer's best (and some of them hard to find) stories. In order of appearance are Little Critter's This Is My House, Little Critter's These Are My Pets (hard to find as a single book), Little Critter's Little Sister's Birthday, Little Critter's This Is My School, Little Critter's This Is My Friend, and Little Critter's Staying Overnight. All of these contain a simple vocabulary that children remember after repeated readings. Soon, your child can actually recite the stories for you. These stories are wonderfully sweet and enjoyable to read again and again.

My daughter, age 7 was able to read, but did not enjoy it until I gave this book to her. Each page has just a sentence or two and it is fun to read and the pictures are fantastic. This book has chapters and I was hoping to get my daughter to read one each night - instead she asked to read two the first night and 3 the next. It showed her that books can be fun.

I bought this book for my not yet 5 year old daughter. It was love at first sight for her. She found the stories and the pictures to be very cute!!!! The book has movtivated her to practice her reading all by herself. What is neat about this book, is that the illustrations are also interesting enough for my 2 year son, who does not mind his sister's slow reading of the story :-)
