Little Critter's Read-It-Yourself Storybook contains six of Mercer Mayer's best (and some of them hard to find) stories. In order of appearance are Little Critter's This Is My House, Little Critter's These Are My Pets (hard to find as a single book), Little Critter's Little Sister's Birthday, Little Critter's This Is My School, Little Critter's This Is My Friend, and Little Critter's Staying Overnight. All of these contain a simple vocabulary that children remember after repeated readings. Soon, your child can actually recite the stories for you. These stories are wonderfully sweet and enjoyable to read again and again.

My daughter, age 7 was able to read, but did not enjoy it until I gave this book to her. Each page has just a sentence or two and it is fun to read and the pictures are fantastic. This book has chapters and I was hoping to get my daughter to read one each night - instead she asked to read two the first night and 3 the next. It showed her that books can be fun.

I bought this book for my not yet 5 year old daughter. It was love at first sight for her. She found the stories and the pictures to be very cute!!!! The book has movtivated her to practice her reading all by herself. What is neat about this book, is that the illustrations are also interesting enough for my 2 year son, who does not mind his sister's slow reading of the story :-)

My son is 3, not reading yet, but he is a huge fan of Mercer Mayer's little critter books. This collection contains some of his best stories and illustrations. Because it is a large, hardback book, Mayer's drawings are much bigger and easier to appreciate.

Of the six stories, "Staying Overnight" is one of my favorites. Little Critter's friend's family is wealthy and he makes observations about their lifestyle which are very innocent and matter-of-fact, not overly jealous - although he's fairly amazed at the size of his friend's teddy bear.

"This is my school" is another of our favorites, which showcases Little Critter's excitement about school and learning on his first day.

This really is on a great level for first time readers. I would read it to my son and the letters are big enough and spread out enough that he could pick up on the words. . . and he was 3yo. Now he reads it on his own at 4yo and with so many stories it is lasting entertainment

When my four year had just figured out that she could sound out words she spent *hours* with this book. The text is very simple, but put together with the pictures these are actual full-fledged stories, unlike many early readers. It's a great collection.

I think its silly anytime I read 6 of Mercer Mayer's BEST Stories, They are ALL his best! I mean, HOW do you choose?! With Little Critter, its a win-win! Ella loves this book, she's a huge Little Critter fan, and I try to buy the collections before the individuals to save money. There is a story where Little Critter shows you his home and family, very cute I thought because at the end, he hugs his little sister when he thinks no one is looking and says I even love my Little Sister. Another Story about going to school for the first day of the year and everything he is doing throughout the day with his friends. A story about staying the night at his friend's house, who has a lot more that Little Critter, but at the end of the day, Home is still where he wants to be most of all. Then there is a story where he introduces you to all his pets, and boy! is there a LOT of them! Another story is about his sister's birthday party and how Little Critter would like to buy all these presents (for himself) but manages to pick the perfect gift for his sister, and it ends up being her favorite one, he knew that. And last, but not in this order, Little Critter's first crush in "This is My Friend", is very sweet, in how they go from being sweet to mean to each other, like all little boy-girl friendships at that age. A very sweet and endearing collection that your Little Critter will love for years to come, I know mine does!

We had ordered a book and then we ordered this one and they sent us two of the same book so I am not pleased with that but my daughter had this book several years ago when she was just learning to read and the loved it so much that she wore it out. So when I saw it here I wanted to get it for my other children to read with but they sent the wrong book.
