Editorial Reviews

Going on five full-length records since 2004, Asthmatic Kitty's Castanets has given us a wide-lens look at deconstructed Americana. Now, Castanets' Ray Raposa presents a second band, Raymond Byron and the White Freighter, and a 2012 full-length, Little Death Shaker.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEAUTIFULLY TWISTED October 21, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
My musical tastes have always been toward the adventurous, I like artists
that are not afraid to take chances and twist things up a bit. Artists
such as The Handsome Family, The Violent Femmes, Giant Sand, Beck, Benji Hughes
and Captain Beefheart have been cornerstones of my music collection, not just
for their bending genres but also because they transcend their respective ironies
with a quality product. In other words their talents and drive make their iconoclasm work.
Raymond Byron is such an artist, his influences are perhaps too numerous to list
including everyone from Leonard Cohen to the Drive-By Truckers. He seems to take
nothing for granted, each song is a small universe unto itself in the way
it presents his fresh and sometimes satiric approach to a specific genre. Some
songs such as the Cohenesque Whipporwill are played straight and display his
immense songwriting skills. The song Stateline at a torturous 9+ minutes has
it's tongue planted firmly in it's cheek while it mutates and dissolves, it
makes Townes Van Zandt sound like a perky pop star in comparison. Most songs
are short and if not catchy, are quite creative.
If you like the list of aforementioned artists for the reasons I have listed
you will not be disappointed in this genre busting CD. Did I mention he is a
great songwriter?

5.0 out of 5 stars Like nothing else... July 31, 2013
Format:Audio CD
Comparisons are tempting, and I can't say I disagree with the previous reviewer. He mentioned some interesting artists who are forging, or have forged, their own paths. To me, this album feels new, fresh, and ancient at the same time. It has a sparseness that means business. There are no extraneous ideas, no blind alleys. This is a record that pulls you in, and takes you for a spin. Buy it.
